would love to do a basic horse qualification - not to specifically work at the mo but to learn more about them theory wise really and have some time whilst i am being a mum!. there is so much out there so not sure where to start - want to do something that includes riding and maybe business theory... it seems you can do bhs or btec national level or national certificate, and you can study at home or at college. Not sure what to do - has anyone any experience of this? what carries the most weight? just came across an ad for the open college of equine studies that do distance learning, is it any good?i am based in hertfordshire/south beds if that helps!
thanks for any help.

I did nvq level 1 and 2 for fun 1 day a week at a college outreach centre. I know people are rude about NVQ but i think you get out what you put in, I think it actually taught me in depth more than BHS but if you want to use it , BHS is better recognised as I think it is more standardized. I found it hard work to fit in round full time employment but worth it, I knew what to do before but it made me understand it better.

I did the NVQ 1 & 2 not for a career path but moreover for better understanding of how to look after a horse. A couple of years ago my horse would have died in my care within days now I'm told how well she looks. Bottom line is if you want horses you need a well paid job so a career working in the equine industry isn't generally advisable as you'll earn chump change however, to become confident, competent and understand basics of horse care go NVQ. When you're ready to learn about what colour pants to wear in dressage then do a BHS course.
