I never really know what to use for what.
Cuts I either clean out with water and put some warm water and salt on or I clean out with water and spray with purple spray.
As well as purple spray I have Vaseline. Thats about it.

What else do I need?
And what basics are actually for what!?

It's not that complicated . . . and you pretty much have the basics :).

For cuts/scrapes, etc. you want salt to mix with warm water (which you already do) and perhaps some hibiscrub, although do be sparing with that b/c it's high octane stuff.

Purple spray and iodine are both good antibacterials for slapping on after cleaning a wound.

Wound powder is good for drying stuff up/encouraging scabs.

Vaseline makes a great barrier for wounds that may otherwise get dirt in them to help keep them clean . . . also good for loosening junk from gelding's male bits.

Veterinary gamgee is used for securing dressings to legs/feet and providing support to limbs under vetwrap.

Vetwrap - basically a bandage that sticks to itself that holds dressings/gamgee on to keep a wound dry.

Skintact - what you apply to a wound (most often on a limb) over whatever ointment/cream, etc. you have applied as a barrier between the gamgee and the wound to stop the wound getting linty bits in the wound (I just read that back and it's appallingly written)

Cotton wool - obviously for cleaning wounds

Nappy cream - great for rubs and abrasions

Optional:

Aloe vera - good for aiding healing of wounds

Arnica - for bruising . . . ditto Witch Hazel

I'm sure others will have some other ideas . . . hope this helps.

Thanks for all that. Going to write a list of all the basics and stock up on them! Just realized how under-stocked I am on first aid and am having a panic over it!

Whilst I'm asking about lotions and potions, is there anything I can use to encourage fur regrowth on scars? :)
