Although we have a "first aid kit" for Calli. My daughter wants a proper one for Xmas as part of her Xmas list. So I have looked at the kits you can buy ready made and think I will be better buying a box a doing a specialy made up one. So what items do I need in it. I already have vet wrap, purple spray, wound powder, bandages, animalintex. What other things can I get to make a new kit for her Xmas present for daughter.

Mandy, I'd ditch the wound powder and go for a gel instead. Current medical advice is to keep wounds moist as it promotes healing. What about eye wipes, one of those leg wraps you put in the freezer, couple of tubes of polos, round ended scissors, thermometer, hoof boot.

I would miss off the purple spray and wound powder. If you are friendly with your vet, I'd go directly to him and ask for a suitable vet-strength wound gel/ointment; over here it is called Furacin (you do have the same thing in England but I can't remember the name; Vicijp knows though).

Here's some of the things I have which might be useful to her;

Scissors
Povidone Iodine
MTG by Shapleys (invaluable to me!)
Tape
Digital thermometer
Latex Gloves
Large syringes which can be used to give medication straight into the mouth
Vaseline/lubricant
Bot Fly Knife
Liniment (for puffy legs)
Baby Sponges
Antiseptic Wipes

Gosh it's difficult doing this for you in England as I keep thinking of all the other stuff in my vet cupboard and then I remember that you guys tend not to keep all of these things; bute, penicillin, broad spectrum anti-b's, banamine, cortisone, needles, syringes etc

Clean Bucket,
Hibiscrub,
Mug(s), Coffee/tea/cupasoup in case you're stuck up at the yard in the cold waiting for the vet/watching a horse with colic.
Nappy/duct tape for poulticing.

I have quite a large 1st aid kit and always have kept one.

I have things like those instand ice packs, hibi-scrub, dry towel, horse plasters, human sterile hand gel, amimalitex, Rescue Remedy, tubes of sterile water etc.

I also have a basic 1st aid for horses book in there - just in case for those unusual little knocks and bumps - this has bin useful to me and others in the past.

Hope this helps

You can use it on humans and animals, on cuts, scrapes etc.

My horsey 1st aid kit contains....

Hoof knife, Nippers, Buffer, Hickory hammer, Hoof pick. (Should I need to remove a shoe or deal with a abcess/gravel) These are handy to have even if you wouldn't want to use them yourself. In an emergency someone else could use them, but only if you have them!

Salt (for making saline solution) useful for lots of things!

Surgical spirit.
Iodine.
Hibiscrub
These cover all eventualities.

Vasaline.

Thermometer.

Scissors and a sharp knife.

Bandages, cotton wool and gamagee.

Disposible gloves

Teramycin spray. Or similar from the Vet... don't bother wih purple spray or wound powder.

Vets phone number... and number of the horse ambulance.

The only thing I can add is I stock sanitary napkins - the large older style thick ones - which are perfect for putting over a wound/stopping blood without sticking to the wound or leaving 'bits' of cotton wool in it!

We also have a couple of clean towels and a brand new pack of travel bandages so we can deal with big wounds if awkward places i.e. shoulder or middle chest.

Oh, use hydrogel or the like for the wound and ditch the powder. Aloe vera works brilliantly.

Brill advise from everyone there. Some of the things i had put on the list like Vaseline. We have it at home but not at the yard and some syringes (none of these at home I might add!!!), sudocrem, latex gloves, ice packs. I can get to the horsey shop in my lunch hour so going to start getting bits and bats now (or is it bits and bobs?).

I get a lot of my horsey First Aid stuff from human stockists as they sell the same stuff but its' cheaper than from Tack Shops/vets such as:

http://www.claytonfirstaid.com/

In my kit I also have masking tape which is better and cheaper than medical tape at sticking to dry horse hair and coming off again easier (like for taping on Melolin - non stick plasters).

Duck/tank tape. Excellent for keeping bandaging on over hooves, such as for abcesses.

And I have all my kit in a fishing tackle box bought from B&Q because you can get more in it than one of those traditional green First Aid boxes, though Claytons (above) do boxes of varying sizes so you might be able to get a decent sized one.
