Myself and OH are wondering what to get our nieces for Christmas. We only see them once a year, so we're not totally clued into what their latest fads are but we do know that they love horses as only girls of this age can. They take weekly riding lessons and are mad for all things horsey.

I had suggested a book or two from the Black Stallion or Silver Brumby series (I had relatives who kept me placated with these when I was a horse crazy kid) but, according to OH, brother-in-law insists that they're not great readers. They also have plenty of books -- with pictures -- about breeds of horses and that sort of thing.

I'm not really a "kid" person, so all I have to go on is my own experience as a horse-obsessed kid. But I was also a book-obsessed kid so a lot of my initial ideas along those lines don't seem to be helpful.

So if any of you horsey folk who have more experience of children than I do have any ideas, it would be fantastic to hear them!

Forgot to add... Their mother (who's a bit like hard work) doesn't think they should have "games." We got them a horsey board game last year. She wasn't happy.

How about an embroidered jacket? For about £25 on ebay you can get personalised blouson jackets in lots of different colours, and have their name and a pic of horse/pony on the back?
I always wanted one when I was about 10, with my name and my pony's on it, but wasn't allowed as pony's name was Brandy, lol!

I second the embroidered jacket idea.. I'm still wearing mine nearly ten years later with my first pony's name on the back! When I was 9 my auntie got me a year's subscription to Pony Mag. I'm not a great reader but would read it cover to cover, so that's another idea :)

Saddle Club dvds. My 9 and 11 year old love them. Also, hoodies with their name on (and pony if they have a favourite). Basically, anything with a horse on. :)

How about a Breyer model horse? The Classic size are not too expensive, my daughter has many of them and they're really lovely to play with and as ornaments.

Can't post a link from phone, but Google luvponies. They have allsorts, from bags, to hat covers. My 7yr old loves it, but not all the stuff is little kid stuff. Or second the subscription to pony mag.

Any kind of riding gear. Does the RS they're at do "own a pony for a day" things? Where you pay X amount and they get to look after a pony for the day.

Or could you pay for a block of 5 lessons or something?

I am a mum of three pony mad girls aged 6, 10 and 12. Pony gifts they've loved have included:
Scheich ponies (collectable), personalised hoodies with their names on the back, cuddly ponies of any description, sub to Pony mag, The Pony Detectives books (amazon), horse printed duvet set, sparkly grooming kits (before they had their ponies they took them to lessons), tickets to horsey events, Horse Show card game, 'Gone riding' door sign.

Now they have two real ponies and they don't get presents anymore unless you count new rugs and bedding :D
