Does anyone know if there is much call for such a service? i.e. doing yard jobs for people during the week and riding if neccesary. i am currently job hunting and was wondering if this could be an option.
I know people who have done it as pocket money while either at school / running other businesses. One person I know has been a riding instructor for years so that is a good recommendation. And she runs a carriage business. You will need some good references or else to give a demo of your capabilities for most owners I would have thought. As for how much to charge, I am not sure. A lot of yards don't do 'jobs' so certainly there are people who want a break two days a week or are going on holiday. Word of mouth would be your best bet.
one of the kids at my yard brings in horses in the evening after school for people and mucks out. she charges £5 for catching in and for a full muck out/waterbuckets/feed and £2 if its only catching in.
Article in Sunday Times goes on about the boom in the equestrian property market (depressing for the likes of me who will never be able to afford to have horses at home!) which may mean there are more people keeping horses at home who need help when they go on holiday or are at work?
Yes, there certainly is. I keep mine at home and use someone for occasional help, eg. when I want to go away, or am stuck at work and can't fetch them in. There are two other people who use her in the same way. I have been known to text her from a meeting, saying, help, I'm stuck here, can you get the boys in? She's brill.
She also has a friend who does a similar thing, including a few poo-picking only jobs.
If you could also walk the dog and feed the cats too, you would become what's known as a 'treasure'.
I also use a dog walker, who charge £5 for a half hour walk, cash in hand. My husband works out that she must take home £12K a year (no tax as all cash). Not bad really for a part time job.
