My sister-in-law retired 3 years ago, and during the winter 2 years ago, she offered to feed, poo-pick and water etc for me oneday as she knew the weather was pretty grim....so as she had been at the field every weekend with us, she had seen what they eat (chart on the wall) and what needed to be done. After the first day, she offered again, and carried on from there!

2 years later, I couldn't trust anyone better than Ann. She feeds, does the hay, fills nets for us to put up at night, does the water, poo-picks and any other job that needs doing. Ann will catch the horses for the farrier, vet, dentist etc and even our awkward anglo is a kitten in her hands.

Speaking of the arab, last week Ann told me she thought he was lame, so I checked him by torchlight that Friday night, and yes, he was lame. No swelling, heat etc etc...and it was the same foot he had had in infection in the previous year.

So last Saturday I decided that yes, it WAS a foot infection (seen many, and not just my horses!) and began to treat it as such....

Sunday morning, the poultice revealed a little nasty stuff.....indicating that yep, there was an infection! Over this week, and especially yesterday and today, the stuff is thick, horrid, absolutely stinks and guess what? Now the pressure has gone, arab is practically sound already.

Each day, sis-in-law has tubbed his foot with hot water and epsoms salts whilst he ate his dinner, then onto his hay, scrubbed his foot well, then expertly applied a hot poultice, gamgee and vet-wrap, then carefully put the poultice boot on again.

If she hadn't been doing this, I'd have been at the field by torchlight!

...so although she doesn't 'do' computers, and won't see this, I'd like to mention how lucky we are that she's such a trooper with our horses!

....and this spring she will be back in the saddle of our cob, whilst I lead her from my mare around the village on a short hack! :D

She comes for her sunday dinner too, and when we are out for a meal, we don't let her pay for her own, as a thankyou, as she won't take money.

Name your own horsey heroes!

My first instructor, Antonia Read, is my hero. For my first horse I bought a 3yo (was told it was 5) which was somewhere between unsuitable and dangerous

I asked her for lessons, she turned up, told me to go sit in a corner and lunged her, later on when I was on board, she taught me the basics and gave me the advice I needed

She was quiet, kind, unflappable, humorous and a thoroughly nice lady and I miss her a lot

my old riding instructor, he was the most amazing teacher i made so much progress and if we where struggling he would get on the horse and show us which worked for me and wow it blew me away every time i saw him ride, he would get a horse perfectly collected etc and never looked like he was moving a muscle

i cried for 2 weeks when i had to leave that place, my favorite pony and favorite instructor it was horrible to leave :(
