Hi anyone had problems with rearing when out hacking with others? My 4yr old mare is just starting out and has been hacked on her own and with 1 other horse. Today however, 4 of us went out and as I hung back to talk with a friend my mare didnt seem to like being at the back and threw a fit.

Could she be in competition with a cob she competes with in the field at home? Shes only a baby and I'm really trying to give her the best start pos, so any tips would be greatly appreciated.

My mare hates being out in company, she throws a strop if she is ever anywhere but in front! I just live with it, I would count yourself lucky that yours hacks alone as I find these are few and far between!! :p:p

She is probably just nervous of being left behind! I would practice letting her be in front, then at the back and as she gets more confident and experienced she will be less likely to panic.

As she is still so young I would let her go wherever she feels most settled. When she's been out and heading back for home try swapping her around. Try keeping your distance from other horses that may become excitable as you really don't want her to think rearing is acceptable. I have one who is perfect on her own but hates leading on a ride, would rather be tucked in behind, not so easy when she's a wee thing and has to keep up with a large cob.
