Horsey invention...

Hello,
I was just wondering if anyone on here had a horsey idea/invention and seen it through to production? I have two ideas that I'd like to pursue and simply hoped someone could give me any useful tips. For example is it worth approaching a large company to see if they'll buy which would cost me in the long run if it was successful but would have minimal startup costs or start my own little business from scratch which would cost me initially plus have the risk of not making a penny...have any of you experienced either route?
I'd appreciate any advice you could offer in addition to my other research.

I had an idea for a different tipe of exercise sheet as a teenager and after winning competitions with it decided to patent it

I can't remember how far along the process we got as I discovered boys and lost interest but the idea was to sell the rights to the design rather than try to produce it
