I'm a fan of Alfa Beet - I use it on my old mare who tends to drop condition and it definitely works for her. She seems to really love it too and finishes it all up.

Does the new feed smell strongly?

Could you introduce the new feed slowly? as in graadually increase in amount

Have you tried getting a vegetable peeler, and peeling carrots/apple/parnsips, you then mix these in and they have to eat the feed to get the carrot etc, they cant just pick around as easily

My mare's not eating much hard feed either which is a pain because she is missing out on her oil (she has EPSM) and supplements. She seems to be saving herself for the grass as she is more than happy to trough that down. I have resorted to minute slithers of apple and carrot mixed in with the absolute minimum amount of hard feed to absorb her oil (650mls a day!) and she is now eating most of that but won't touch her breakfast. I am now trying some mint but think I am flogging a dead horse - so to speak!

Also Have you tried fibre care, all the oldies at my yard eat it soaked (because they dont have many teeth) and they all look brilliant thanks to it, and are evry hard to keep weight on

the grating fruit technique doesnt work-he just picks at the carrot bits etc then gets bored-and it takes such a long time as i have to stand with him when he eats. Yeh the C&C does smell quite strong which probs puts him off even more. What is the difference between alfa beet and fibre beet?I might try the saracen minty chaff and just add a handful in every feed as i won a bag of it the other day

i just cant seem to find a supplier to get it from

One of my friends suggested adding some peppermint oil/essence to the feed to camoflage (spelt wrong!) the smell, not tried it myself but???
