My share horse is feeling a bit under the weather but is displaying random symptoms so we're a bit baffled. He's off to the vet this afternoon but just wondered if anybody has any ideas?

He's normally quite a lazy horse anyway but he's particularly lethargic at the moment. I rode just before the big freeze 2 1/2 weeks ago and he was very slightly lame on the off fore in trot for the first 10 minutes (1st time in 10 years I've known him be lame) then was sound but sooooooo slow for the rest of it. He was also wanting to put his head virtually on the floor for the whole ride.

My first thought was back so had it checked and chiro said he had a little bit of tightness in the area where he had a problem a few months ago but it was very slight and nothing like as bad as the problem before - only realised there was an issue then when he was acting a bit odd when jumping. He jumped the week before the latest problem and was fine. After that though he would be sorted.

He then had 2 1/2 weeks off mainly due to snow. His owner rode him at the weekend after the snow had gone and had exactly the same issue but slightly lame on near fore instead. Still very lethargic, head on the floor and his owner had to lead him up the fairly steep hill home as he 'felt like he was going to give up'.

He's eating fine but isn't interacting with the other horses in the field much. He's never been the most social but is definitely keeping to himself more. He's not beating my horse up going to and from the field either which is normally his favourite activity. He's never been very affectionate but tolerates you doing anything to him, and although he's still doing that, it's not quite so happily, he's pulling the odd face which he never does normally. He trots up sound, poos and wees look normal, no more or less than usual. He's not gained or lost any weight. He's 15 and has had a fairly easy life. He's only needed the vet twice before - an abcess and stitches when he tried to barge through a barbed wire fence.

As I said he's off to the vet this afternoon but just wondered if anyone had experienced any similar symptoms. I can't work out if the lameness is causing the other issues or the the other issues are making him feel pain that he could ignore when 100% fit?

I assume vet will do lameness workup and maybe take bloods?

Possibly at his age he might be starting to get a bit arthritic - if he is feeling stiff in both fores then it might show up in the way you've described I guess, as he tries to save one then the other hurts. Mine has arthritis and I can tell when he is feeling it as he starts to get a little stiff and lazy (and before anyone jumps on me, he's just had 1.5 months off and a course of Adequan to make him comfortable!). Lameness could cause other issues - arthritis can cause soreness elsewhere as the horse tries to compensate and I guess other conditions can also.

The only person who can give you a sensible answer is your vet, though. No one can diagnose your horse over the internet. There really isn't any point in trying to pin point the problem this way as you will get so many conflicting ideas that you'll just scare yourself rigid :)

I know. In some ways I'm hoping to hear the worst here so that when the vet tells me otherwise it's better than I expected :) I just like to be prepared and consider all possibilities so I can ask the right questions etc.

If you're anything like me (and I really am this neurotic!) then by the end of today, you'll have convinced yourself that your horse has spavins, navicular, kissing spines, ulcers and Cushing's!! When in fact my horse is just an older horse who has hunted for most of his life so is just starting to feel his joints a bit, not the end of the world and manageable so far :)

The lameness could be any one of heaps of little things, your vet can sort that out, often alongside your farrier. The listlessness could be a virus or infection, or possibly the result of an iron deficiency. As above, your vet will most likely run some bloods and will be able to have a very good idea of what's going on from the results.
Easier said than done, but try not to worry. He is in the best hands and I'm sure will be back to his old self in no time!

Yup, my horse (not this one who is my share horse!) went lame nearly two years ago. X-rays clear, no obvious problem but it wouldn't go away. I was convinced it was the end of him, but he had 7 months off and then came back into work slowly. He's never had an issue since (touch wood) although we don't jump any more - he wasn't much good at it anyway! I'm sure Monty will be the same.
