Have a dressage championship this weekend that I'm helping prepare a pony for. Pony was clipped 3 weeks ago and his coat is already growing in and as he lives out, we're not bathing but hot clothing every night after ridden work. Just wondering if it's okay to do so with surgical spirits added to water? And if so, how much? Used fairy liquid last night whch is okay, but which is best? And would you baby oil coat after?

Thanks

I hot cloth our show cob with vinegar as you are doing - regularly before a show. When I bath him I only use fairy liquid now. After fast work or if they are hot I use a cooling gel in water which smells lovely and fresh.

I wouldn't like to use surgical spirit, I always thought that was for hardening skin. I know it wouldn't have strong properties being diluted in water but its something I wouldn't think to use.

Hot cloth with a dash of baby oil and dettol in the water.

Use a gamgee dampened with surgical spirits/meths to take dust off a dry coat.

Two different methods!

Wow - thanks for all the ideas! Never thought to use Dettol I must admit. Poor pony is going to be hot clothed within an inch of his life by the time I'm done! :D
