My little boy is sooo hot I can't put a fly rug on him as he sweats up when he has it on but he's being harrassed by horse flies and normal flies! He's also scared of spray so runs off or gets upset if I try and spray him! Any other suggestion as the fly cream is useless?

Have you tried spraying the fly spray onto a body brush and getting it on him that way?

At risk of repeating myself (there is another fly related thread kicking around today) I can recommend Natures Botanical http://www.naturesbotanical.biz/products.html
it comes in a creme as well as a spray and is really good but quite pricey.

Can you decant the fly spray and apply it with a sponge- then fill the empty spray bottle with water and play with it to get your pony used to the spray.

Which fly rug do you have? I have a very sweaty mare and certain fly rugs make her sweat, but she is actually cooler in others. Often if the horse is a darker colour, putting a bright white fly rug on will keep them cooler.

I can't bring him in :( we have two stables but they aren't anything special, so are used for storage only and the last time I put him in at night in the field shelter he jumped one gate and pulled the other off its hinges! I shall try the spray on a brush idea and see if that helps! But at the moment I'm slapping of each horse fly for him hehe

If you can't bring him in, put a fly sheet on or spray him, he is, sadly, just going to have to suck it up :( Just make sure that his water supply is adequate, not much else you can do.

It is 10am here and already 28C, more like 34C with humidex, my horses are sprayed and have masks on and some will stand to be hosed, but otherwise they are just going to have to deal with it.

Mix fly spray in a bit of water and sponge it all over- cools them down aswell. Mine both have sheets and hoods on as the horse flies are worse than them being a bit too warm i think. One swat on my horses neck last night had 6 horse flies!!!

The question is what would you do? I would clear out the junk from my two stables, fix them up, and bring my horses in during the hottest part of the day so that they can have some relief from the baking sun and the flies. x

This is why I like mine in during the day!

Aside from that, I use a cotton combo sheet rather than the fly sheets when my horse is out in the late afternoon/night - currently in a Mark Todd, but have also used weatherbeeta kool coat to good effect.

The very synthetic fly rugs I find make them sweat.

If the field shelter/stable is actually in the field I'd clear it then leave it open so he can go in & out at will. And get an bottle of water & get him used to spray. Plus working on getting used to stabling, not just for the flies but its a good thing to learn.
