Hot haylage

We have been using large haylage bales all winter but as they are having less and the weather is so warm it is starting to get hot in the bale. Today I have opened the whole bale and put the sections spread out to try to keep them cool. Any advice.

It's the same for me, I'm unwrapping mine completely and spreading it out, seems to be keeping fine now. It does dry out a bit but that's not a problem for mine.

Unopened (and unpunctured) haylage bales shouldn't get hot. But once they're opened (or punctured) the oxygen getting to it starts the fermentation process off again with different organisms. An opened haylage bale only has a limited shelf life. If I were you I'd switch to small bale or ditch it altogether and use a hay/lage replacer eg Hi Fi Lite.

I may have misunderstood OP's post, I agree haylage getting hot in the wrapped bale is not good. Mine is fine when still wrapped but the bale was staring to get warm when opened (with the wrap partly still round it if that makes sense) but completely unwrapped and spread out it is absolutely fine.

Yes seems fine now I have spread it out, only have one bale left and then they don't get any as turned out but have to wait until after BD champs this week.
