Well .... had my young lad shod last wednesday with our usual farrier who's been shoeing him for the past 6 months and all was well rah rah rah. Later that day I had the vet out for his annual check up and he was as fit as a fiddle except being noticeably lame on his offside fore. Now this wasn't that apparant in walk yet you could definately see it in trot. Now at this point in time there was no heat in his hoof and i thought it may be due to the splint he had acquired in his field a few days previous ... so he was put on some bute and that was that.
However, the lameness is the same, not very noticeable in walk ... and much so in trot! His hoof is now hot but only near the top of the hoof going round to the back.
Now in my honest opinion I dont think its the splint causing him any issues and I swear it must be something with his shoes as its only occured from the day he was shod.
My friend who also had her mare shod by the same farrier on the same day is experiencing exactly the same problem with her horse yet its the near side fore. But literally the same symptoms .. hot hoof (near the coronet band round to the back) ... lameness predominantly in trot and slightly short in walk ... no heat or swelling in legs either. She has the farrier back out 2 days ago to re-check the shoes but he could see anything?
Is it just a coinsidence theyve both gone lame at the same time?

Can someone offer and opinions?!
WE'RE BOTH STUMPED

I feel your pain as I'm currently into the third week of the exact same issue with my horse. Had him shod on Weds 16th Feb and was lame the next day. I had the farrier out twice as the only thing showing was heat in his hoof. (No heat or swelling anywhere else) I had the vet out on Monday just gone and all she could find was a slightly tender spot on the inside heel area of his ns front. He looked almost sound on the left rein and only slightly off on the right rein in trot. The vet recommended an Iodine and sugar poultice for a few nights with a little bute as back up. She felt there was bruising coming out either from the shoeing or from standing on a stone and hopefully the poultice would help draw out bruising (Especially since there could be an abcess forming) and then to bring him back into work slowly avoiding stoney/uneven ground. I have had my horse on box rest, just turning out in the school for short periods to avoid him causing any more damage to his sole and we are both getting very bored of it now. I am hoping he will be sound by the weekend but if not I will be back to square one with you! I wish I could be more helpful but tbh your best bet is to do what I did and initially consult your farrier.

Get the shoe taken off to see if its a nail pinching
could be an abscess-why haven't you had vet back out?

At this time of the year puss in the foot, abcesses and bruised soles (sometimes caused from the farrier banging the toe or side clips into place) is what all the vets are being called out for - it needs digging out if this is the case and i would call the vet :). One on our yard had it in two different feet in the space of a month, one was just randomly and one a couple of days after being shod - most probably from the toe clip being hammered in!

Yeah the vet got his magical hoof density measuring thingy out ha ... and we did find he had a bit of a sensitive spot near the tip of his toe on his sole. So he gave us the bute and just don't us to keep an eye, and to be fair it hasn't got any worse so I havn't panicked just yet. But thanks for the advice, i'm just going to walk him in the schoool for a week or so and avoid hacking. Hope all is well with yours!

Havne't had the vet back out yet cause he didn't feel it was nothing serious and said to give him a call if it got worse ... which it hasn't. Farriers coming out tomorrow now :)

eh I hope you mean not riding him and box resting/on small turnout area when you sya 'walk him in the school' the horse is lame with an unknown cause, although most likely an abcess.. Poultice the foot tonight to see if that draws anything and ideally hot tub too. Let us know what the farrier says.

How far back from the toe was the sensitive spot?
