I remember posting something similar last year so sorry to repeat myself.
My horse is a 7 yr old ID x TB x Shire, middleweight and a bit overweight (embarrassed!!) Hes not like a fluffy teddy bear yet but I really could do with clipping him soon. Hes been on light exercise for the last 3 weeks due to a swollen fetlock but I can now start doing a bit more with him again and hes sweating on a short hack.
Hes currently got a LW turnout on 24/7 and is often too warm. Problem is he is turned out by YO in the mornings and she wont want to be changing rugs so I really dont know what to do. If I clip him, I'll worry hes not warm enough at night in the LW but if I put his MW on I'll worry he will roast in the day at the moment as its so mild.
When I bought him in May (3 yrs ago) he had a massive thick stable rug on and was fine so I dont know whats happened.
My friends horse has a full neck heavyweight rug on and is fine.
What would you do. I suppose he will be fine in the LW as he really could do with losing some weight but I will feel so cruel if it suddenly goes cold overnight.

Thanks for replying.
Thats another reason why I cant understand why hes sweating, hes in a Rambo LW rug at the moment, so its definately a good breathable one. None of the others were hot today, do you think his weight has anything to do with it.

The weather is daft at the moment, I clipped my two yesterday, clydie and gypsy cob with an blanket but with the hindquarters left.

Today in thin (no filling) T/O rugs they were too hot. Tomorrow have said to leave rugs off if same as today.

Have put them way with LW rug on the old clydie and a fleece on the gypsy cob - no way could I put even a MW weight on them.

If he is a bit tubby, leaving him slightly cool will help thin him down. Plus if the others are fine TB types, and yours has plenty of thick shire and ID skin, then he will keep warmer.

Thanks,
Weathers crazy isnt it. Watchin the news before and they said windy but a possibility of 19 degrees furthest south.
I think we will have a go at clipping next weekend.

Ive really got to be strict with this weight issue, weve been spoilt this year with the amount of grass and the winter field is frightenning. The athletic sports horse I bought is no longer!! Im so ashamed of myself.

OMG! same problem with me....ok...this sounds stupid, i know.....oakeyhas been turned out in a loveson l/w and has come in sweating under it or hot a couple of times.......on wednesday, she came in alme after hunting, YO told me to put on my m/w so she has been wearing that for the last few days.....some of the weather has been warmer than when she had her l/w on and she hasnt come in overheated or sweating!
what i think is that it is the material.......the l/w has this sort of silky material - maybe nylon?? and the m/w is sheep fur lined....its a much thhicker rug, but she does not get hot in it...just the right temperature.....hope this helps
xx

My last mare was like this. If I put nylon lined rugs anywhere near here she sweated, whatever the temperature. It was a problem as most modern rugs are now nylon lined so I remember buying a few Shires Highlander rugs as they were cotton lined in one go to keep me going!!!
It has been warm though hasnt it, my boy is not usually affected by the nylon linings but I suppose you never know. I hope not, finally managed to replace my old rugs with Rambos. That would be just my luck.
