Please can you explain how to hot rag your horse as I own a "white" horse and am going to a competition at the weekend. He needs a bath and I have heard on this forum about it with this cold weather! Thanks

It is great for getting grease out and a shine but will not always clean as well as a wash.

Get some water as hot as you can put you hands in (use rubber gloves to help). A squirt of washing up liquid and take a cloth (tea towel or similiar) immerse and ring well out so steaming hot but not wet. Rub over horse (I use circular motion) it will cool quite quickly so keep wetting and ringing out until whole horse is down. Often useful to have kettle of boiling water to keep topping up water and keeping hot.

Horse should not get very wet in this process but it really lifts the grease.

i use hot water with a mug of cider vinegar to lift the grease, leaves a super shine.

TBH if i had a grey id wash the front end, keeping rugs folded over the back, then fold them forward and wash the back end, rug well, bandage legs and walk in hand until dry. i doubt hot ragging will work as well on a grey as bay/chestnuts etc.

Pretty much as already described. When I worked on a showing yard we used plain hot water with a piece of screwed up sacking; scrubbed thoroughly with a circular "scrubbing" action and then strapped them dry. Very effective - keeps you fit!!

I always use surgical spirit, but in the past have used a hand ful of washing soda crystals, that gets the grease out brilliant.
TBH though I would just bite the bullet and give him a quick bath the night before your competition and rug him up well and bandage his legs.

I use hot ragging on my cob as he detests being bathed (esp. in the cold weather!!). I tend to add a dash of either vinegar or a dash of dettol to hot water (hot as you are comfortable with) and use a microfibre cloth to help remove any grease from his coat. I agree with princess_sparkle and Sarah_jane though that im not sure it will work as well with a grey horse as it tends to work better for removing grease out of the coat as opposed to actually cleaning the coat.

I wouldn't bother with hot ragging a grey as it's really to remove grease and dust from dark horses -

Presumably he's clipped?
If so Cowboy Magic stain remover is brilliant - spray it on sparingly and wipe off with an old flannel dipped in hot water.
Keep rinsing the flannel out in clean water and if you have any big areas to do (my mare loves to rub her thighs in poo!) cover up with a clean thermatex or similar straight after. It's not quite as effective on unclipped areas such as the legs and you might have to wash and rinse these properly.
Make sure the horse is really dry before you let him or her loose in the stable otherwise if it is anything like mine it will roll and find more stains!
