I am trying to get my 5 year old boy used to the hot shoeing, he is okish now with the smoke but is such a fidget!!! I currently give him a haynet (dosnt work) and feed to keep still (does work) but want to wean him off the food, he makes such a mess with the food and our new yard is a bit more fussy even though I clean up after him. My farrier currently shoes the fronts one day and the rear the following day - he is a very patient man!

Any advice and tips would be appreciated.

Tie a quiet older friend up near him when he is being shod which will help give him confidence.

Was he cold shod before, or not shod at all?

When does his fidget? Can he properly balance on three legs whilst he is being shod?

I would just take is slowly, making sure he has plenty of time to put his feet down and rebalance. Personally I think having a haynet is a good idea, but I suppose it depends on how fussy your new yard actually is?

Thank you for your replies they are very much appreciated.

I do tie a haynet but hes not that fussed on it!!! I will try putting him next to a friend though.

He has been cold shod in the past I think. He can stand still being shod with his nose in a feed so I guess he is not that unbalanced!!! I guess its like you all said - time and patience!!:)
