I had to take Prince the pug to the vet yesterday after he developed hot spots on either side of his neck. He had scratched them quite a bit, creating lesions and crustiness, so they required cortisone shots, and now he's on a spray and antibiotics etc.

These are the first time he's had them, and it seems that three days of swimming, 90% humidity and 95-degree temps took their toll.

Has anyone had experience of hot spots? I've read that clipping out the fur can help, although the downside to that is less protection from the sun. I will add that Prince was neuteured at four months of age (not my decision--he came from a puppy mill breeder) and his coat, particularly around the neck, is incredibly dense and more like a Husky's than a Pug's.

Always, clip and clean and let it dry out, hair being left can cause infection as the hair jsut gets stuck to the area, becomes claggy and irritates more, clipping the area lets the air get in and dry's it out quicker, fuciderm is fab for smearing on the area and stop the itchy sensation, then obs to stop him scratching it and keeping it raw.
My shepherd has them, but she has an auto immune disorder.
My rotti once had one on her face, I clipped and cleaned and it dried out in days.
My mams shepherd also gets them, she has ears problems, sometimes it can be a self mutilation for pain or discomfort in an area they cannot get to.

B's are his ears, throat, between his toes, underarm and chest areas - if he gets very hot they get yeasty and bacteria-filled and then BAM we have a problem - fuciderm or even aloe vera gel works, and Malaseb once a week, he is also on Piriton.

Our GSD is terrible with them as she's got bad allergies :( she gets them under her arms, between her legs and on her tummy.
We have a supply of Fuciderm and Malaseb in and clip her every time she gets too hairy - her medication causes extra hair growth too. Luckily this seems to keep it under control

My old GSD used to get them, only occasionally thank heavens.s I used to clip the hair away and wash with mild hibiscrub solution, they soon cleared up.

One of my huskies gets something similar. The best thing I've found for them is camrosa ointment. Have tried many things (and she's been seen by head of dermatology at Edinburgh vet college) but this stuff seems to work the best.

Thanks so much for the suggestions.

I'm hoping he's on the mend with all the medication rattling around his system. This never happened while he was down in muggy Florida, so I'm inclined to believe the swimming pool was largely at fault. Pity, as he surprised me by a. Being a phenomenal swimmer and b. Loving every minute of his time in the pool.

The sores are currently clipped out and exposed, but what do people think of a preventative trim round the neck for next summer?

If hes got a ruff round his neck a bit like a sibes make sure hes dry right down to the skin after using the pool as that can be a cause of Hotspots too

Can totally echo keeping everything as dry as poss - B's ear has been fine for a week, had to leave him outside for a while last night (very muggy and mizzling rain) and when I brought him in it was a right mess :(
