ok so it goes like this. Cappelli my 16.2 TB mare who ive owned for 3 years has never been lame and never been swollen aprt from bog standard filled legs at night in the winter......untill today

. App she had been hooning around the field

I didnt notice at first and went to get her in for my lesson i brushed her down and still didnt noitce it- i was talking but still not sure how i didnt notice it

. I always run my hands down her legs when i tack up and boot her up.

Her frount right fetlock is very swollen and hot from mid cannon to the bottom of the fetlock ( excluding the pastern ). Mainly around the sides and the back of the leg ( prime tendon and ligament area

).

I cold hosed it and a friend trotted her up. She is lame in walk but very lame in trot

. I put her in with extra bedding and gave her 2 bute and put an ice FMB on. Ive gone back just now and the ice had gone hot. Ive put some like ice on her leg and wrapped plastic over it then put on her thermatex leg wraps on both frounts.

Now what do i do????????

Do i call the vet and ask then to come and see her then take it from there ( run it on a tab and if it goes over the excess make a claim if i need to- ive never claimed on my insurance )

Or... call the vet tomo explain the situation ( they usually put the ball in my court then and say do you want us to come out or not as they cant tell untill they have seen it)

Or leave her on box rest for a few days and moniter it???

There is no trauma which has me thinking the worst

thats its tendon ligment related and im meant to be at badders next week so dont want a mad last mintue dash to get vet out just before.

Do you think id be over reacting by calling out the vet?

I cant turn her out as the bute will be masking the pain and she can be silly anyway and dont want her to damage it anymore

Well I think you have done the first stage correctly.Have you identified where the pain is.It could even be in the foot but if you think it is in the fetlock area then rest is essential.Reduce the feed immediately if she is the same tomorrow I would get the vet ,if you leave it to the weekend then it will be more expensive.

Thanks for replying!

Ive just rung the vet and they said if its just a knock everything i did yesterday should have improved it. But if its no better then they said call back and they will come out this morning.

So i shall see what shes like when ive taken the kids to school in a mo and go down to see whats waiting for me

.

I dont expect it will be any better the heat in it last night was rife. I shall go and wash the clay off and cold hose it.

Vet it thinking along the same lines as me in that because of the area esp being the back and sides of the fetlock that if theres no improvement this moring they will come out.

Wish us luck i shall post an update later.
