Who does it / done it and under what circumstance.??

I was asked to do it the other day, and I think it was only about the 5th time that I remember doing it. I told my mum, who is a dictionary of 'horsey things' and she really surprised me by asking what it was and that she had never heard of it, nor done it.
Is it a common thing, now out dated? Is there any point to doing it?

It's a great way of "deep cleaning" a hairy horse on a winter's day, especially a grey one! I haven't done it recently because my horses don't generally go out in public in the winter time, but it's just about the only way to get 'em really clean if you can't wash.

I use hot water and a dash of baby oil.

To get the best results I hot towel straight after grooming. I use 2 buckets of hot water (make sure you can submerse your hand in the hot water comfortably) one with the baby oil the other clean hot water to rinse towel in. Dip small towel into water with baby oil, wring out well, and give the coat a good rub down, when the towel is greasy rinse out in clean water and then repeat process of rubbing down until whole body has been covered. I start hot towelling at the greasiest points (so top of quarters, mane and between front legs and around elbows) while the water is at its hottest and then work over the rest of the body. Try to make sure you have a clean rug to put on after :)

I usually hot cloth with a bit of dettol the night before a show to help degrease, then again in the morning with baby oil to shine them up.

I hot cloth before a show to remove the last bits of dirt from the coat after rubber curry combing and brushing. If there isn't time to hot cloth though, I use a few baby wipes, brings out the top layers of remaining dust and gives a nice finish.

I hot cloth my coloured - with a splash of dettol or other antibac (Tesco does/did an apple scented one). It really brings out the grease and any stains, and works even on his thick coat.

I prefer hot towelling to bathing. Water as hot as you can and white vinegar. I also have some old super soft baby blankets that work a treat.

I use toweling squares (old towels cut up) and cider vinegar in the hot water. I don't really ever bath horsey, I much prefer hot toweling but I try not to strip too much oil out of the coat in winter.

I did this once with my new boy and so I think its time for another go. He loved it but then he loves a fuss. Will make time this weekend :)

Microfibre clothes all the way :p

On pro yards this was part of normal grooming, curry comb, then hot cloth with cap of meths, then flick off.

Also works well with surgical spirt.

Super hot water is the answer!
