Do you think my local pack would let me hack out with them on hound exercise ?
I don’t want to hunt again as horse has had tendon issues but he has always enjoyed hounds and I thought a hack around the lanes either with the hunt staff on horses or on foot with hounds would be good for him. He needs a bit of a ‘lift’ while minimising the risk to his legs.
I will ask them, but before I do, just wondering whether this would be a bit unusual and therefore perhaps not an appropriate request ??

Best thing is to contact your local pack's secretary.

Our hunt encourages subscribers to come out on hound exercise as helps get the new season hounds used to the horses. However as you are not planning to follow the hunt it would be up to their discretion.

You did not say whether you have done mounted hound excercise before, but with our pack it is relatively intense and involves a lot of trotting on roads, sometimes for up to 2hrs, so you would need to be sure his legs would hold up to that.

Hope that helps!

I agree with Sidney, contact your Secretary and they will be able to tell you your Hunt's policy.

Ours allows subscribers to go out on hound exercise - it starts off relatively easily for about an hour whilst the 'puppies' get used to everything and gradually increases in term of time out/distance covered.

With our Hunt it is all about educating the young hounds so we keep our distance so as not to interfere and gather up any that get left behind or lost. This can mean returning to kennels with the odd straggler rather than completing the mornings exercise.
