Hey i am still none the closer for finding somewhere to ride! I am in milton keynes and hopefully with some help from my friend i will get the chance. I am bit worried in case i fall off and stuff! How do you steer the horse? How do you make him/her go faster? Speed is good!! Does it take long to learn? Is it expensive?

Its a bit more technical than I think you are hoping! Kick to make them go faster is the general gist but you will probably be walking for a bit to start. Are you sure you just dont want to get yourself a racing car!!?

Expensive...let me think...if you dug a hole in the garden and threw all your money into it, you would probably be better off than owning a horse!!

Thats a good way of saying how expensive it is Merlotmonster, i shall use that next time someone asks me

Yes you will be walking to start with and im sure they wont let you go "fast" until you know how to start and stop properly, and dont worry about falling off, its all part of the fun! Im sure you will become addicted to it like most of us, its great fun!

you'll be walking for first couple off lessons maybe trotting depending on riding school where i work probably start trotting second lesson if feel comfortable in doing it. It can be quite expensive but if you joined a group lesson it'd be cheaper than a private lesson.

it will take your whole life to learn and even then you wont know everything,rs will teach you the basics ie how to stay on etc walk, trot and canter and jump if you desire but its not as easy as you seem to think

Talk of doom and gloom. My OH was starting to jump by his 6th lesson and the neighbour took up team chasing after 10 weeks. Neither were elegant but both were happy and soon learnt to balance. Fear didnt enter their vocabulary and falling off was part of the fun. Whatever you want to do go for it. You only live (and die) once

Nope tiz true. If they had been confined to ordinary lessons they would have given up. The neighbour was in a championship team and competed all over the country. When he realised any team he was in were classed as veterans he took up point to pointing instead.

How about one of these?

Are you sure you want to learn to ride. It's quite easy to pick up the phone book and look under riding schools. Or are you just on here to talk to girls. Are you 50 with a beer belly and a mid life crisis?

I used to keep my ned at a riding school and one evening they had the local Round Table book for an evening pub ride. 20 testosterone filled, competitive, professional guys, none of whom knew the front end of a horse from the back but who thought you just get on and kick to go, pull to stop. Before they'd got down the school driveway most had either fallen off or were clutching their dangly bits in pain but of course not one of them was gonna admit that it may have been a bad idea! They never, ever came back! If you wanna do this properly Hound, you have to get the basics under your belt first. Ask any orthopaedic consultant what sort of horse-related injuries he has seen in his department and it might give you an idea of what can go wrong! Live long and prosper my friend!
