Didnt want to hijack thread about bargey horses - but what about a horse that won't always walk though a gate - sone times fine & at other times just jumps through - happens going out & bringing in -he knows his strength & that he can do it - more groundwork - what sort of things ?

While you wait for the groundwork other people will suggest to improve his manners, can I suggest a chifney immediately to improve your chances of surviving the winter in one piece?

Ground work I'm afraid :) It doesn't take that long and really worth the effort. However if he has a particular problem with gates you should make sure that you going through gates is part of his training . If he barges through then keep repeating it and praise when he goes through nicely. It worked well on friends horse that I share when we got fed up being dragged about by him or trying to pull him along when he'd decide to graze. He now leads beautifully.

If you use a lunge rope ad are quick you can wrap it round the fence post, I used a bridle to bring my boy in from the field and a training halter to put him out, being intelligent he was perfectly aware the amount of control I had, and was perfectly behaved 98% of the time. Though for several months he was pretty disrespectful.

I have to confess that my homebred 2 yo filly went through a phase of doing this :o. I know however what triggered it, which is always helpful. When she was still on the mare, I would bring them in to the stable together one lead rope in each hand, and they were both very good about this. Unfortunately, one day the wind caught the gate and slammed it shut on the youngster as we went through, she leapt forwards and sideways onto me, knocked me flying and then she took off towards the stables.

That was highly unfortunate and I am a stickler for for good ground manners but hey ho, that's life. After that, she tried to do the same thing a number of times. So it was back to basics, lots of groundwork, opening the gate wide in front of her and making her stand and wait for me to ask her to move on. If she even leant forwards without moving her feet, I would make her back up and wait again until I asked her to move.

She does her gateways perfectly now, but I expect that it will always be in the back of her mind to charge the gate given the wrong combination of circumstances and with a handler who isn't concentrating.

LOVING the title !! Been thinking about those freaky houses fighting their way through a gate that was just too small to fit through. What to do, eh ? :D

I'm wondering how one does groundwork with a house... Should I being doing it with mine? It doesn't even yield to pressure - should I buy it a giant dually?!

You need to make sure you're feeding it the right sort of bricks for a start.

Ok.... I apologise it was late for me & I was on ipad - should of said horse - All I can picture now is a house on legs trying to jump through a gate !!!!
I know we need to do some groundwork & deal with lack of manners which we have already started - I just wondering if anyone else had and different ideas - feeding him some bricks may help as they may weigh him down enough to stop him trying to drag me off :)
