What do you allow/not allow your dog to do?
Jump on furniture, free range access all areas, beg around the table or anything else?

Or are you the owners that dog stays in its bed/area until told otherwise?

not allowed on furniture or in the 'back' of the house i.e. bedrooms. I don't let dogs beg either. He's allowed to tell me when to put wood burner on (usually by dragging his bed in front of it and huffing. He's not allowed on laps because he's an oversized red setter with pointy elbows.

I probably don't have enough house rules for my spoilt little dog... Main rules are don't annoy the cat, jump off a lap or sofa etc when told and sit on the mat so her paws can dry before running around the house, and don't go upstairs. Other than that, she pretty much goes where she wants and follows me around the house whenever I'm home.... She goes on all the furniture, but has to get off when told. I don't care about begging, I just ignore her!

My only real 'rule' is that they are polite, obedient and well mannered at all times. My current dog (11m old Vizsla) is testing this 'rule' to the limit!! His bench surfing habit is infuriating and very hard to break!!
Mine have always been allowed on a spare bit of sofa but Hugo is a bit of a wannabe lap dog and would rather have knee to sit on even though he is by no means lap dog size!
I have however let him cuddle up with me on the sofa today as he currently has 'Swimmer's Tail' and is feeling VERY sorry for himself.

Not allowed on settees unless invited. Not allowed in bedrooms unless it's Sunday and they have been out and dried off. Not allowed to beg at tables. Not allowed through the gate from the garden to the field until I've been in and checked nobody is walking through with a dog (they're a bit territorial) on the footpath. Other than that chaos rules.

Main rule when he is doing the washing up at the sink he must wear rubber gloves!! Other than that he does as he pleases.

Both of ours are allowed on the furniture but only the jrt is allowed upstairs. They are not allowed out the garden gate unless I am with them. They are not allowed to watch us eat but we always save them a bit. Would have the lab upstairs but there would be no room left in the bed!! Other than that they do as they please and are no trouble at all

My 4 are allowed on sofa and beds. Rules? Well no begging, ever. They do get leftovers if appropriate so my dogs have been known to give me a polite reminder if I am a bit slow. No eating off human plates or from the dish washer and MUST let me wipe paws on the way back from the garden..

Not allowed on sofas or beds. Not allowed to beg (work in progress with the lab!!!) not allowed to be fed from the table. Not allowed to jump up, again a work in progress with the two that live with me!

Allowed on sofas but must ask for permission first and are shoved off/told to get down if they don't ask. Allowed upstairs and on beds, again - with permission. No begging - ever. Must leave human food if human gets up and leaves plate (they actually do do this, they will leave a juicy burger if told to . . . but I can't for the life of me get Fred to leave my tea - as in mug of). Must wait for human to give them permission to pick up any food dropped . . . must wait for human to give them permission to eat their own food. No jumping up at visitors. Nose out of dishwasher and bags of groceries.

Not many rules really . . . they know them all and (mostly) stick to them. Daisy is, right now, asleep next to me on the sofa and I love being able to just reach over and give her a ruffle.

Not allowed on furniture, not allowed upstairs, stays on her mat when muddy till dried and allowed off. Goes on her mat when told to.
I am fairly laidback about her being near the table at mealtimes, if we have guests then she is told to stay on her mat.

I don't invade the dog's space, and he doesn't invade mine. We don't have dogs in the room whilst we eat, and when we sit and watch the telly in the evenings he (or they), come in and join us. During the day, the dogs are either in the kitchen, or on their beds in my office, or they're out with me.

Does it at all sound a bit draconian? :D All our house living dogs have their own beds, and their beds are their own space and place. At any signs of stress, I find that they migrate to their beds.

Anyway, that's about it and for those dogs which live in the house, then that's how my mother did it, and so do I.

One correction and an exception; Terribly young puppies, on the very rare occasion when I've had them, are always in my bed with me until they're old enough to sleep alone. Over the years it's raised the odd eyebrow, but as I've always pointed out, "It's to do with priorities Dear"!

Alec.

During the day, weather permitting, free range of kitchen and garden (and OH office) . If we are out, they stay in the kitchen. In the evening they are allowed on the settee for cuddles until bed time.

Allowed on sofa when invited, must leave anything on the floor unless invited to eat/drink.

We're working on Fizz jumping up. She doesn't dare with us but we have friends who back away from her or refuse to raise their knee to her so she takes advantage.

Neither go upstairs (thanks to babygate) without permission.

Oh god. We don't really have any. They are allowed on sofa and beds! The Staffy begs and I taught the jrt to beg. They have to get off something when told to and having 4 terriers in the house, the main rule is no fighting!! And no barking when I'm on nights 😊

No touching or licking people plates, kitchen table or work surfaces.
Noses out of the shopping bags... and the oven and the dishwasher.
On the mat when coming in from the garden to dry feet.
Must have permission to eat from their bowls.
Don't get on the sofa/bed.

We don't however have any rules about personal space.. when im on the floor they are all welcome for a lap cuddle... which is usually followed by a 3 way labrdador bundle with elbows!

No jumping up, licking, not even allowed to look at us while we eat.
Supposedly not allowed upstairs, although smallest son has ruined that.
Not allowed on furniture (except smallest's bed).
No wiping snot on the tv screen during any animal based program.

Alec - I laughed at the thought of you having a puppy in your bed, never did I imagine!!

I feel mean! Winston not allowed on furniture or upstairs, has to sit before he crosses the road, if we drop food has to wait permission to eat it. Supposedly not touch the cats food but sometimes she leaves a bit (I think to annoy him!) and it is gone by the morning.

Not allowed upstairs or on the furniture, if I want a cuddle I sit on the floor. Sits and waits to be told before she can go and tuck in to her food (same goes for dropped scraps etc.). Sits when I stop when she is on the lead. Must take treats/chews gently (she is a labrador!).

Not allowed to beg or get on the furniture, not allowed upstairs. No mindless barking and all toys only allowed in the kitchen.

The only rule obeyed is the upstairs one and that's because of the baby gate, she hasn't worked out how to open it yet! :-)

Well I try...with three Parson Terriers its a bit manic.

Not allowed on sofa, no begging while I eat, definitely not on bed, HOWEVER, when OH is home on a weekend this all goes to pot!!

Best not to introduce her to our JRT, then. Our stair gate sometimes doesn't close properly. The JRT wanders around the house, whistling innocently, then takes himself off to neatly headbutt the stairgate open and is straight up there for party time!

Waits to be told she can eat, no going upstairs, OK on her own cushion on sofa, no begging but we do always save her a bit, she always asks for her tea in her own unique way....she is a mini schnauzer!!

Dear boy waits until newly washed floors are dry before walking on them. He doesn't beg and eats after us. No jumping up at people and no stealing food left in his reach. He only comes on the sofa when invited and doesn't go upstairs, except when OH is abroad and then he seems to think that he ought to guard me all night by thoughtfully sleeping at the end of my bed.

My dog can do doors for me :D I remember years ago my Mother saying 'can't you teach that bleeding dog to close doors after itself?' and I thought yes, I expect I can. Obvious next step was to get her to open doors for me if my hands were full.
she's been a good dog for me over the years but she's getting on now and I won't replace her when she goes.

Wow, some impressively trained dogs by the sounds of things. And some more 'free range' types like mine, which is nice to read.
