I have a jack russell x labrador who is gorgeous and very biddable in every way apart from staying clean in the night. He has a cage and is good if he's in this but if we leave him out of the cage he seems to find it fair game to poo in the utility room. He's now back to being in a cage every night which is a shame as he likes to snuggle into a basket with one of my other dogs! Any one got any ideas - i should add that he's just over 2 now so there's really no excuse!

Keep using the crate, there's no reason he can't be shut in every night:)

Also, try a last thing at night walk to get him to go, so he's empty before bed time. You could also alter his feeding times so he is not fed in the evening, thus reducing the amount of ammunition he has;)

Ah yer it's a terrier thing I've had to crate all mine my last one who I lost in the summer at 15 was actually nick named poo dog as she was quite happy to poo when she wanted!!! She wouldn't do it for months then would do a few in one night!!! Her favourite place was my daughters bedroom floor the madam!!! She ended up been crated at night as are my present 2 terriers!!!

What time of day are you feeding? Mine are fed in the morning which seems to be better as they have processed the food for the evening.

thanks for all advice so far. He's fed morning and night (right amount of food for his weight just split inot 2 portions) and is basically left through the night. He goes out with my other dogs last thing (quick walk around our fields) but is in between 10.30 ish and 6 the following morning.

I'm assuming he's healthy and his poops are normal poops, not runny? Sorry to be gross, just to be sure there's no medical cause, such as his food disagreeing with him.:)

You should be fine to feed once a day I think, many people do, and this might help.

Ok should be OK for that length of time I would try dropping the afternoon feed or giving him a larger breakfast and smaller tea.

FWIW my JRT is fed at 7pm and goes all night infact has to be shoe horned out of bed on cold mornings.

Just make sure he does do his business on the last walk, Oz has a habit of sometimes not going, (runs up the garden and come straight back in) which is normally when he gets me up in the night to go out (little sod).
