House training JRT puppies

We are having no luck house training the puppies. We are using mats and taking them out regularly but they just don't seem to get it. They do generally use the mats but sometimes they just wee whereever they are - and they look at you like they know it's wrong but they are doing it anyway (I know this is me being paranoid really). Sometimes we take them out for a long walk and even hang around the garden when we get back - then when we give up and come inside they just immediately have a wee or a poo.

I think we must be doing something wrong - because we have had them for two months now and they are no nearer being housetrained.

Any advice gratefully received and no offence taken if you want to tell us how crap we are.

JRT are notoriously difficult to house train. We have one on the farm who is now houstrained - only took about 9 months.

Yes - when we are out - but they have even weeed in thier crate. We have been cleaning it out regularly and washing their bedding. They are upstairs in my daughters bedroom at night - and wee everywhere. Her carpet is completely ruined - and that's with the paper mats all over the floor - sometimes they scratchat them and then stand on them and wee on the floor. It's a nightmare.
 
Well the simple answer is to crate them at night - making sure that they are taken out for a wee before the last person goes to bed.

The minute they are let out of their crates put them outside for a wee. Stay with them and praise the minute they have done it.

Personally I wouldn't use the pads. I can't see that it does anything other than to re-affirm that it's ok to pee in the house.
 
AmyMay - I agree with you - that's what I thinkit is doing. I also think it is confused by the incontinent kitten - who is the first kitten I have ever had that hasn't got housetraining (unless she is being confused by the dogs). I am going mad with all the sh*t around the house.
 
oh bless you, housetraining can be a nightmare! What we normally advise is to put them out in the garden every hour on the hour, plus after each sleep, drink, eat and play... Also try to keep an eye out for signs of thinking about going to the loo inside such as sniffing, circling etc... I would also crate whenever you cant keep an eye on them and during the night. It might be worth setting your alarm for a few hrs earlier than you would normally get up in the morning so you can let them out for a wee and then go back to bed, to stop them weeing in the crate... Its a very time consuming way of doing it but doesn't last that long and it beats having wee and poo everywhere! Its also important to clean the accidents up with a biological solution that will remove the smell even for their sharp little noses, as this may be confusing them all.. Washing powder dilutedin water works well or you can buy special stuff at the vets or in pet shops.

Failing that have you tried clicker training? JRT are clever little things and mine will learn anything with a squeeky toy or a piece of treat!

I really don't want to tempt fate ( as our JRT is only 12 weeks old), but she has been dry in her pen at night since the third night we had her (about ten days in a row now), and has only had a couple of mistakes during the day. We had randira's problem that day ie puppy didnt like getting wet, and came in without doing it's poohs.
At the start she was taken outside every hour, and given treats and praised when she did her business. Now it is every 2-3 hours, and after she has woken up from a sleep.
Maybe having two of them makes it harder?? Are they girls or boys (I forget). My mum and SiL both say girls are easier to housetrain.

One girl and one boy. They both seem to think the floor is the right place to do it. I think we have just done it wrong. I have let the girls do it and they have been lazy. Had a big word with them and hopefully things will change.

We are going to get rid of indoor mats - and take them outside everytime they eat, wake up and every hour after that. Here is hoping - now I need someone to tell me what to do with an incontinent cat.

if you got the kitten after the puppies she may very well be confused by all the "toilet smells" other places than her litter tray...

try to use some of the same techniques with the kitten - look for signs that she needs to go to the loo and carry her to the litter tray... ones she has been in it.. leave some of the dirty litter in when you clean it so some of the smell stays. Some cats may be shy to go in a litter tray (silly I know as they seem perfectly happy to pee in the middle of the living room carpet...). Try to position the litter tray in a quiet corner or try a box tray (ie cat has to enter through a flap and is enclosed whilst attending to business...). Failing this maybe something is wrong with you kitten and she needs a trip to the vet?
 
Yes - have done all these things - kitten is homebred and I have years (too many to mention) of experience of litter training and have never - never - had any problems. However, this kitten has an umbilical hernia which I was going to get fixed when I have her done - and I am now wondering whether this is affecting her. Also she is a ginger female - wondering whether it's defective genes. she just really doesn't get it. (Also if we leave the poo in the litter tray - the dogs eat it - yuck.)
 
Oh dear, Boris (JRT) was dry at nights since first night he (9 weeks) has been here, is fully toilet trained at 6 months. I did put him straight out when we wakes up then do the hourly routine during the day then granually increses to 2 and so on, he now asks to go out at 10 months old. I have also have 13 year old cat with bladder stones, she often had to go on the carpet/bed if she can't get to box quicker enough or is in pain (it's very much controlled now)
JRT are incredibly clever little buggers they'll do it but u got twice the problem and the kitten problem so therefore the house is covered in ammonia which triggers the animals to pee where ever they like. I would if i were you to restrict them in ktichen when you are not there/at night times, (i am aware that u got 2 girls) It will get easier now it's start of the summer holidays and your girls should start helping you with the responsibly of putting them out once they have done their business praise them, if they done it in the house say "no" firmly then put them straight out.
