House training question

In your experience which dog breeds are the easiest to house train and which are the most difficult? For instance I have been told that some dachshunds are nearly impossible.

Dachshunds and JRTs can be tricky, never had a huge problem with German Shepherds.

My most difficult was was my little terrier who is a cross with 6 breeds but his dad was jack russell /chihuahua and I’ve heard that chihuahuas are very difficult to housetrain so I blamed that part of his breeding

I completely agree with German Shepherd Dogs being absolutely no problem to house train. I have had two. As puppies, I made sure that they went out every two hours into our fully enclosed back garden and gave a verbal cue (see below) for both urination and defecation. Waited until one, other or both had happened and then paired that with the appropriate enthusiastic "Doggie Poo and/or Doggie Wee!" in a Barbara Woodhouse-type encouraging high-pitched and enthusiastic voice and a very small high-value treat. Job done.

Dachshunds ive met many that use the house as a toilet even well in adulthood ( ex dog walker ) .

Our littler terrier wasn't too bad, she picked it up pretty quick, our lab on the other hand was slow off of the mark...

Purely anecdotal but my friends dachsund went in the house until she was about 2. She reverted to outside when they made her a covered area outside with sand underfoot

I've had six JRTs and none have been awful, a farm bred one that we didn't get till he was 4 months took a little longer but nothing too bad.

Italian greyhounds. It’s not that they don’t “understand” the training and what's required of them, they just deem it beneath them to have to go outside to toilet when there’s any type of precipitation in the air, temperature is below 15c, if it’s a bit windy, bit dark, bit wet underfoot or if the sky looks like it’s falling down!

My small dog beat the GSD, but only by a week or so.

Edit: His accidents were a lot easier to mop up.

I had weather based regression with our oldest whippet but she was quick as a puppy. Current Vallhund puppy is a hard slog but is getting there. We're currently managing 5.5 hrs overnight and 2 - 3 hrs in the day.

My Labradoodles have been the easiest to house train. The most difficult is my current Whippet, who just cant get the hang of it.

My other puppies have always followed the older dogs outside and toiletted when I said "wee wees", but Lola has a mind of her own

My first JRT - amazing no problem. My sons JRT x border - he could not train but I took her for two weeks aged a few months old. Trained her no problem in the first week. My JRT x ?? yorkie? rehome - no problem aged 7 months. My JRT pup now aged 4 - took 9 months and is still probably only 95% reliable. My daughters daxie x jrt - perfect if the weather is good very unreliable if it's raining or if cold or if she is just not in the mood . Same sensible training methods used on all dogs ie. no punishment just regular being taken outside and praise for doing it in the right place. All"can" wee on command but only the rehome boy and my old JRT and my sons JRT x border would do it every time!

Labs and rotters a dream, jrt's understood but couldn't be bothered to do anything that wasn't their idea!

Every one of my flatcoats have been super easy, in fact never made a mistake in the house. My daughter’s whippet arrived from the breeder at 9 weeks and was crate and house trained! They also have dachshunds which took a little longer but not too bad in the general scheme of dachsies!

Mitch is the same, takes one look out of the back door and proceeds no further if there's even a tiny bit of rain, yet happily leaps into the river for no good reason. Zak was the same. Bladders of iron, the pair of them.

Easiest was the Kelpie...housetrained in the first day (obviously let out plenty often to begin with). All the terrier-y creatures were much harder than the Kelpie, but all about the same as each other. Dee (jrt x) was probably the worst, as wasn't reliable inside until about a year old, but tbf I worked on yards at the time so she spent so much time continuously outside with me rather than in the house to recieve the right training.

And in the case of our JRT's, tiny brains! We should have been warned, we knew their antecedents and other relatives, who were also almost completely unhouse-trainable

Actually I think terriers are so intractable as they are clever. Labradors are stupid, and therefore compliant.

I've had no problems with GSDs and BCs.
I've never had anything smaller.

I think they just don't care enough. Terriers don't work for free baby . They are like the die hard trade unionists of the dog world. Also fans of collective action given the opportunity

That was so true with my difficult to housetrain terrier. For the first time ever I used treats to reward him every time he performed, housetraining then took about one day, he was the first dog I have had trouble housetraining and I’ve used the same method with all of my dogs and never had a problem, and never had to bribe them, bloomin terriers!!!

Yep they just don't care. Ruby still occasionally takes it into her head to not bother to go out. Telling her off results in a waggy tail and an "I know you don't mind really" expression. She is not even properly appeasing! But we forgive her every time. My terrier x boy occasionally has a loose poo indoors and he is so sorry and anxious if it happens (about twice a year), he is also mortified if he vomits (not unusual unfortunately). But their good points are endless <3

Current lurcher came from kennels clean from day two. Previous Springer also from kennels clean by end of first week. He was five and had never lived indoors. Jack Russell we had for twelve years was never fully clean! Definitely did protest wees!
