Over the last 2 weeks one of our dogs has taken to pooing and peeing in the hall at night. He is 3 years old and up until now has been totally house trained.

I cant figure it out, he gets fed in the morning, gets walked before we go to bed which is about 10ish and then let out first thing in the morning!

what can I do to stop this?!?!?!
 
Just a thought, but could you be having some night time visitors like foxes that are giving him anxiety and the need to mark his territory? This is going back to a primal instinct. If you have rabbits or guinea pigs you may find foxes challenge their territory by leaving excrement on the hutches, or they pee on dog toys left in the garden. Dogs and foxes share certain behaviour as they are related.

Otherwise can you think of any other reason your dog may be anxious? It sounds much more likely to be a psychological thing than physical incontinence imho. You could try a DAP diffuser to see if it makes any difference.
 
I havent found any evidence of foxes but we do live in the middle of nowhere so there is a chance that there are foxes about. Do you know of anyway to get rid of foxes?

I cant think of any stress or anything that he might be going through, he has life pretty easy, plenty of walks and plenty of attention!

Sorry, a DAP diffuser is a plug-in thing like an air freshener that releases Dog Appeasing Pheremone (DAP). It's supposed to mimic the scent given off by the dog's mother when nursing and is supposed to soothe dogs under stress. The jury is out on how effective it is, but it's one more thing to try. You can get them at the vets or some pet shops.
 
If you find he is not anxious and just being dirty, then confine him to a small area or crate.... that way when he feels the need to dirty your area, he wont be able to..... he will have to dirty his own den....

He really will not want to do this, and this in itself could be a way of telling if he can help it or not.
 
this is a problem we have too. my dog is almost 4 and perfectly house trained apart from at night. i make sure he does go before bed... standing out in the garden with him like a puppy and going back to praising him when he does go.

I also restrict food past 8/9 at night so technically if he goes before bed he won't need to in the night.

I have also heard crate training works but i always feel its not nice for them to be in a crate for 7 hours a night!
