My newly acquired GSD is struggling with his toilet habbits, he lives in a run which has a 'house' where he should be sleeping. However he is sleeping out on the concrete run and is pooing in the 'house'.
Initially I gave him a couple of blankets in there, he proceeded to do both pees and poos on there. So i changed the blankets for straw. This made him worse!
So I have thoroughly cleaned out the house and disenfected it leaving nothing on the floor.
He now holds his pee til he is taken out but overnight he poo's in the house.
He is fully house trained, I did this with a crate which he doesn't soil at all.
He has a routine and goes out immediatly after his tea and has at least 3 walks a day.
Any ideas how I can overcome this?

What about going back to the crate training but putting it in the 'house' with some blankets in it.

I have a 6mth GSD and he is crate trained and only once pooed in the crate and that was on the first night we got him!

If he knows the crate already and knows it is his bed, then he may transfer that thought to the indoor part of his kennel if you put the crate in there for a week or so.

Good luck

By the way, I hope you didn't use a pine disinfectant because this increases the smell (to the dog) of the urine and so they will still wee in the same place.

Ah good idea, knew someone on here would be able to help. Not sure that the crate will fit in though cos it's bloody massive, think it's longer than the house.
Oh and I did use a pine disinfectant, but he hasn't pee'd on it since just poo.
What else could I use to get rid of the smell, I thought about bleech but wasn't sure how corrosive it would be to the wooden floor

For cleaning use diluted vinegar/water (white (clear) vinegar).

Don't use pine disinfectant, bleach or ammonia (or any product with ammonia in it).

If you can't get the crate in the dog kennel, could you partition a bit of the kennel off and shut him in that bit overnight so that he sees that smaller area as his bed with blankets in?

Sorry to hear what is disgusting hound you have, my friends Doberman did that, but in crate in the house!! The only way to really stop this is going back to basics.

When you feed him, you know the time is coming for the "poo", so keep him outside on a lead and take him to his toilet place, reward him afterwards. After a while the penny drops that he has a special place to poo.

I know this sounds like hard work and it is, however it does work. Many of us that have problems like this, have not had the time to spend with the dogs as small puppies waiting for that poo to happen and teaching the dog where to do it.

He has simply decided where his toilet will be. I personally think by putting a crate into his bedroom will confuse him further.

Good luck, I only speak from personal exerience and would never say I am an expert on this matter, only a suggestion.

He's a rescued dog and I've only had him just over a month. He does go straight out after eating and will poo in the right place it's over night when he struggles. He is sometimes in the house and is fine but when I work nights I leave him outside in his kennel as he's a handful for the baby sitter. He does cry at around 2am which is obviously when he does it but I'm loathed to get up at 2am every morning.

Usually dogs will try and avoid fouling their sleeping quarters so maybe he was used to going in the night where he was before and can't break the habit without your help. Have you tried feeding him earlier so he has no need to poo in the early hours? Someone suggested putting his crate in the run section as a bed? Have a go with all new fresh bedding in the crate then move the bedding from the crate into the bed area when he's broken the habit of pooing in the night. I have 2 rescue dogs that went everywhere at any time and it's frustrating but they can be cured. Best of luck!
