I have always used weigh tapes to measure how much wormers i need and if my boy is losing/gaining weight but have been told that they are not acurate at all.But on the horse and country channel they had a nutritionalist from a top feed company saying that they are very acurate,so now i dont know if they give true readings so i may of been under/over worming.Do you think they are reliable or not??.

I'm not sure how accurate they are however someone on our yard has been using it weekly to try to measure hoped for weight loss in her horse and it has showed a weight loss each week. So with someone measuring at the same point around the horse it has been useful for her.

I used it on mine and he weighed exactly what we thought he would weigh (500kgs). I'll weigh a couple more tomorrow and see if it reflects what I think should be quite a difference -if that helps.

I know roughly what weight my horse is & that is what I use when I give him a wormer. As for if the weight tape is accurate or not, I don't really know or care. I know when my horse looks in good condition & I know when he looks over weight. Wether the tape is accurate or not it can confirm to me that he has gained some weight & I act upon that.

If I really want to find out I can always take him to a weigh bridge, we have one 3 miles from our yard........now that's accurate!

Well we've worked out our horses weights using the length/girth formula and we are also having them weighed at the vets on tue so could tell you then how the two measurements compare?!

(By the way we are trying to work out if our two horses would be overloaded in a 3.5t horsebox!!)

Not accurate at all but great for knowing if your horse/pony has lost or gained weight. My last horse was 645k on a weigh bridge and only 579k on a weigh tape, that's a big difference..... but very useful if you just want to monitor weight.

Generally found them to be accurate enough, providing the horse is a pretty average type - the inaccuracies start to occur if you have a horse that's slightly odd in shape!

I agree with this my tape reads 380kg on my cob but he actually weighs 460kg! Usefull for monitoring gain or loss though.

I've weighed my horse with the tape the morning before he went to an equine hospital where he was weighed on arrival and it was within 10kg.
