how and what has she done?

My mare was brought in from the field and when I went to groom her for my lesson I noticed this. I dont know how she has done it as its in a strange place, its on the front of her right chest area , this photo was taken when I noticed it. Im worried about how swollen it is.

I cleaned it with salty water and put wound powder on it but I now think maybe I should have got the vet out.

Has anyone seen a cut like this before, someone at my yard mentioned it looked like a kick but its in a weird area to get that.

Any help or advice about what to do?

It looks as if some of the skin has been torn away, which makes for a more exposed wound. Cleaning with salt solution is useful but if it has swollen up in the meantime it could be an indication of infection.

Cuts always seem to appear on horses in odd places and for no apparent reason sometimes ! you seem concerned and it isn't too late to call your vet.
