This is also in veterinary as well.

My mare was brought in from field and when I went to groom her for my lesson I noticed this. I dont know how she has done it or what kind of cut it is buts its swollen.
Its in the right chest area just next to the top of her leg, its still quite raw looking.

I washed it with warm salty water then put wound powder on it but im thinking now maybe I should have got the vet out.

Has anyone seen some cuts like this before or know what it looks like? someone at my yard said it looked like a kick but its a weird area for that.

Any ideas?

Whats the fencing made of, is there barbed wire around? What about hedgerows/trees? I saw a similar one where an old horse got caught in the hedge and ripped his chest open! They left it to heal with no problems, just kept it very clean :)

Yes this looks similar to when my horse ran over a small sticky bush and ripped open her chest and abdo it was left open to drain by the chest and she kept getting air stuck under her skin in her neck - I would get the vet for some antibiotics at least

Thanks guys.

I know there is barbed wire but the electric fencing runs before this so she wouldnt go near it, there is some bushes and hedges so maybe thats it. I got an antibiotic in her last night and checked her rug and there is a small tear in the front so looks like a bush or hedge is the culprit.

Will be up in a few hours so hopefully swelling has gone down, fingers crossed!
