And do you think I should follow this up?

Warning there now follows a RANT!

In response to an email I sent to BD I got a reply to say that the organiser at Addington admitted giving out our telephone number to another rider's wife and she was sorry she shouldn't have done it!

I feel that the giving out of my our telephone number is a clear breech of the Data Protection Act.

While she has apologised via BD she has not apologised to me or my husband, and was nothing other than rude and unhelpful on the day which is what prompted me to contact BD in first place. I firmly believe that the apology needs to come direct from her not via BD

If I had telephoned to ask for the trainer and rider's number do you think she would have given me her number? She has acted inappropriately and unfairly – very much a case of bending the rules in order to please the people she clearly feels are more important than us! Remember this is the woman who wouldn’t return my calls or emails and was too busy to deal with us in person at the Regionals!

Addington would do well to remember that the majority of their income comes from riders such as myself who are amateurs in a professionals game!

Rant over

Very annoyed!! Not sure about the legalities but its the height of bad manners to give out a third person's number without their knowledge or consent (unless its already available for advertising purposes, sorry, don't know you and whether you run a business). I'd ask for a personal apology at the least.

it is a clear breach of the DPA

in effect though as a security breach the ultimate responsibility lies with the Chief Executive (i.e. if it was a corporate company)

so in effect the apology to you is due from the owner/operator of Addington and not from the person who did the 'misdeed'

I'd expect an apology from the head honcho and not from the gopher at Addington. It is clearly lying within the remit of a lack of staff training in DPA/Information Security

I'm sorry but it wouldn't bother me in the slightest, if you are in business it's pretty normal for people to ask for your phone number via whatever means they can get it. What if it had been someone who wanted you or your husband to ride their horse in competitions? Would you have been so annoyed?
I feel you are making a rod for your own back by being so annoyed about this, as you are likely to come across this person in the future.
So no, I don't think you should follow this up, in the scale of things that go wrong in life it's pretty trivial.....

That's terrible. I rarely give out our house number and would be so annoyed if someone else did!!

You should demand an apology so that they don't just sweep it under the carpet.

Once when I was staying in a hotel in Bath, a work colleague who was being a bit of a pest turned up (drunk) even after I told him I didn't want to meet up and the reception gave him my room number and let him go up!!
I didn't answer the door luckily but I went absolutely mental at the hotel. He was just an overkeen guy but he could have been any old nutter

it's normal if you are in business to have a personal (ex-dir) and a different business number

if it was the personal number given out then every reason to be annoyed

The woman at Addington knew darn well why they wanted to call Mark tho - to have a rant - wrongly!

Worried - I certainly would NOT be impressed at all, and I would feel as though my privacy had been invaded - whilst Addington may possess your telephone number they certainly do NOT have the right to hand it to all and sundry and I agree that had the shoe been on the other foot then no, they wouldn't have given you the number!

It is in breach of the Data PA and the person in question should have contacted you first to either ask you or to put you in touch with the person. We have just studied this and it is Illegal to share someones data without their permission!

If the information, i.e. your telephone number is held on a computer is subject of Data Protection Act. It appears that you have spoken with the parties concerned about this matter & it has not been satisfactorily resolved. The next step is to make a complaint to the Information Commisioners Office regarding this. They have tremendous powers that they can use & there is little doubt that they will be able to resolve the matter for you.

The last job that I was in a person would be instantly dismissed for giving out information from computer records without the appropriate authority.

Christ, its a bloody phone number... does it really matter to get that wound up over, im sure your in the phone book, if you dont want to speak to someone dont. You have had an apology leave it at that, its not exactly life threatening.

This is just another "administrative error" of which there are plenty which ADDINGTON have to add to their list.........overall and culminating ALL their Admin Errors I believe it is time they looked at their list of complaints... of which I know there are many........and re-assess the "office".. I do not believe giving out your phone number was correct AT ALL... a phone call from Addington or letter of apology would be polite... but dont hold your breath.......BD I am sure are now aware of the problems and it is up to everyone to complain........

I may sound harsh but my point being anyone who has posted pics of themselves on this or other forums really does lose their anonymity. (sorry that word looks wrong).
Anyone who tells the world their result mark and posts a pic of themselves at an event on here is wide open to being outed as to who they are and what area they come from.
It's so easy to match up "who " anyone is via their results after that, I've done it myself looking at BE results.
With the information available on all of us now on databases it's also easy to obtain anyone's phone number..
So I can't get excited about anyone obtaining a number because once your name is known, your privacy tends to be over.
It sounds like th official concerned should have rung the original poster first to see if they objected, but if the woman was trying to be helpful it's a bit harsh to cause a stink over it, if however she was deliberately causing bother, well she deserves all she gets.
Try typing anyone's name into the Electoral register, and nine times out of ten you instantly have their address. I don't like the fact that happens but it is all part of the Big Brother attitude that prevails in the UK.
I genuinely feel it's too late to shout about privacy now, it's long gone..

Henryhorn, I can see your point, But, in my opinion, it is just another lapse on the admin side of Addington.....I being biased of course due to the lack of concern about many issues I have with them, along with many others!! But if you asked any other centre would they give our your personal telephone number... I feel they would say no. I think it is just the fact that they gave the number out. freely ......not good form......!!!

Just a quick point - when you re-reg BE there is a box to tick saying you don't mind BE or event organisers giving out your details if someone requests them, I remember ticking it. I haven't been a BD member for a few years, so just check the reg forms and check you haven't ticked a similar box before you kick off too much!
