Hi all,

Does anyone know why tall dress boots are recommended to use for dressage? Is there really that much difference btw them & jod boots and gaiters? I'm currently weighting up whether it's worth it to spend money on tall boots... Any enlightement greatly appreciated.

Not really sure what the real reason is but having used both would not want to go back to gaiters. I love my boots, they make my legs feel secure and I never realised how much until I tried to ride in gaiters again. Whispers.... my legs seemed to flap all over the place :o:o:D
It may just be down to them looking better too.

I think "whole" boots are probably considered smarter and more traditional. However, I think you can get more flexibility in your leg with boots and gaiters. Bens to both. I currently event in boots and gaiters. Not sure if that's BD legal or not?

I always ride in gaiter, I feel I have more flexibility in them. But I would wear a long pair if I could get a pair that fits without having to spend £500 odd! I can't seem to get boots which don't dig into the back of my knees

I feel my legs are much more secure in proper long leather boots, especially jumping. I could not believe the difference the first time I wore them.

K - leather boots will drop after a while - you just need to be patient!

Kokopelli the other option is to take them to your saddler and have them adjusted - I did this with my Ariats and it cost me £15

OP I have both, I generally keep my boots for nice and use my gaiters/short boots at home, however I find that I ride better in my long boots. I saw a lovely pair for about £99 the other day, can't remember which ones they are now maybe william funnells?

you have a lot more bulk around your ankle with short boots and gaiters compared to long boots so less feel.

I ride in short boots at home with no gaiters or chaps and have long boots for comps and lessons.

I used to always wear long boots and hate gaiters ... and then randomly I switched sides and now I can't stand long boots. This thread has made me wonder whether I should go treat myself to a new pair before the sales end, however, as an injury has affected my stability and I never considered I might be able to gain some of that stability back!

I wear gaiters and matching boots - I wear gaiters as they allow me more flex in my ankles and also they fit well at the ankle and leg. I have skinny lower legs and am pretty long in the leg too so I just find long boots a nightmare. I also like to ride pretty short so have to be able to flex. Since my gaiters are leather I get alot of grip and have never had a major issue with lower leg control.

The only difference I find is that I can't get my spurs over my boots and gaiters, but the go on my long boots fine. I use my gaiters at home and to hunt and my long boots for competing. Only because I don't like getting mud all over my long boots! :) I always thought I'd be too short for long boots, but my ariat's dropped a little, without rubbing or anything and now fit perfectly. (I still have to unzip them a little to walk properly though! lol)
Only problem I've found with Ariat's though is that the poppers at the top are rubbish! But got them replaced and now they're perfect :) xx

You will love them! And because they are soft leather you won't have to break them in!

that's what i like to hear! What do you use to clean them with?

both the poppers on my ariat gaitors broke but have been fine since they were fixed. I find the gaitors aren't a very snug fit on my little ankles so they gape a bit but the boots fit great!
