Question for saddle fitting peeps!

My wow saddle is out of action following a slight accident. So I am going back to my med-wide Pessoa. Problem is horse has significantly shrunk since this fitted him. So because its too wide I am thinking of padding out with a front riser prolite (tried a sheep skin pad but it moved back due to being too wide).

So how bad is it to pad out a saddle that is too wide?

It is better to pad out a saddle that is too big than try and squeeze your horse into a small saddle.
My mare is a weird shape and I have to buy saddles a size too big and pad them out with a riser pad and sheepskin numnah. She has never had any back problems. As long as there is the 4 finger spinal clearance and nothing is pinching/too tight/slipping backwards etc, I don't see the problem

I don't think there is a problem so long as when you use it it doesn't move, the horse is happy and it sits the rider in the right place. If there is one, I'm in trouble 'cause I'm using my big mare's saddle on my little, narrower mare with a pro-lite front riser.

I agree with Damnation about the width, so long as the saddle is still sitting with the seat parallel to the ground it should be ok, only becomes a problem if the padding tips the saddle putting more pressire to the back or front.

Thanks guys I used my pessoa with all the riser pads in the prolite and it sat in a good position and seemed to work really well.

Will continue with this and see if it makes any difference to his jumping compared to his normal saddle.

Front risers are not intended to make a saddle narrower they are meant to fill in gaps caused by muscle wastage thus lifting the pommel of the saddle.

As said above, you will need to check that the balance of the saddle is not affected as you will be putting more pressure on the back.

As long as it still fits well, I don't see the problem.

I have just bought Chancer a really nice show saddle, and went for a wide fitting. At the moment he is a medium wide, but within the year will have filled out more and need the wide.

The saddle fits well, but is slightly wide, though not sitting on his withers is a little lower than I would like, hence putting the thicker pad on for the short term.
