How best to find new yard/field etc

Thinking along the lines of returning to private renting a little yard or field - has anyone "found" a place this way?

I have driven down a few lanes (steady) and seen a few little horsey places and fields, how best to find out who owns them? I was thinking of putting a note - but if I put it on the gate, someone else might take it and have my number, so should I be cheeky and put it on the yard??

I was thinking of putting in my little note that I can provide references (I can ) would that make you more likely to call me, if it were your field I put a note on?

Any other thoughts?

try and speak to some of the people around there (usually older people seem to know the history of the area who owns what). Also trying contacting the local council. What county are you in?

Bridgend Sadie Thing is, its just a rural lane, no houses to speak of, although there is a nursing home with lots of caged oldies for me to probe! That's a good place to start!

got both my last 2 places that way, polite note on gate.
current place i have no intention of leaving unless i really have to as its fab, have made a really good friend & my boy just loves it there (& all that from a note)

Drove around and spoke to farmers in area found my place that way, if i had not found it would have started to leave notes.

I would speak to the local farmers if possible, they seem to know who owns every piece of land

friend of mine did just that and found grazing for her horses.
