Sorry i did one of these before but only a few answered..
I have a 3 yr 3 month who is currently 15hh behind and 14.3 1/2 ish in front.
I just found out that his mum is a welsh d who is 15.2hh and his dad is a 1/2 appy 1/2 tb who is 16.1-16.2hh.
he is really leggy and quite immature looking for his age. i did the string test and it came out 16hh but is it likely he will grow another hand?
SO how big will he likely grow?

I had a mare who was 14.2 as a 3yr old when i sold her, i spoke to the new owners a year later & she had shot up to 15.3!! In fairness though she had had a very poor start in life & i think this was the reason she was still so small at 3.
 
Oooo what's 'the string test'?? Is it some form of guestimate of how big the horse will be? I'd love to try this :)

(It probably involves maths so I'll need to have my shoes off to do the figuring :)

Yes it is a way of guessing the height. U take a piece of string and place it the length between the elbow and fetlock. U then invert it so that the same length goes from the elbow to the wither and beyond. It is said that the extra height between the wither and where the string ends is where the horse will grow to.
To get the actual height u just measure the length between the elbow and the fetlock, double it and add 3-4 inches (however long between the fetlock and the ground) not completely sure how accurate it is tho.
If ur interested there is another way where u take a tape measure and measure between the middle of the knee to the corner band and if its 15 and a half inches then the horse will grow to 15.2 etc. I did this on rowan and it said 15.3- 16hh. Again I don't think it works on every horse but some people swear by them :/
 
So hard to tell what height he will make. As a general rule a 3yr old is not likely to grow another hand but i know of a few that have. A friend of mine had one that she had breed herself that was 15.2 at 2 1/2 and ended up at 17hh. I have a 2 yrs 2 month old 3/4 ID who when he came to me as a foal i was told by nearly everyone on yard that he might just make 15.2hh (which worried me quite a bit as i'm 5'9") he is 15.3 now so he should make 16.2 -16.3
My guestimate for yours would be 15.3hh. Keep us updated as find these posts interesting!!! What height are you hoping for?
 
Great thanks. I would b very happy with 15.3hh. To b honest be4 I found out mares height I guessed she would b 15hh and thought rowan wud therefore make 15.2hh but its just the tests and him looking so leggy that didn't match up. The lady who sold him to me said he wud make 15.1 but she didn't know anything about the parents.
