I have just acquired a mare and foal, the mare is 12.hh welsh pony and she has a 4 month old foal at foot who is already taller than she is by a couple of inches. We don't know what breed the foal's father is but I've been told that there is a way of working out roughly how big the foal should grow by measuring the cannon bone and doing a calculation, does anyone know how to do this? Also they have had a riggy gelding turned out with them so unfortunately he's been given to me as well, he is really attached to the foal, any ideas on the best way to separate them? Don't want to over load the youngster by making too many changes too soon.
