My mare has mud fever and I need to treat it , how can I remove mud without washing or brushing if I put oil on top and put her in on straw would it come off ? any suggestions would be great.

I personally would wash in the first instance and hibi scrub to soften the scabs then sudocream and keep off the mud...but that's just my opinion which I find works, there are so many ways/products to try.
If you really don't want to wash/brush the mud off then I guess leaving in over night then rubbing off would work...?

I know I need to wash it all of and what to do once its off ,it's just she is not very tolerant of having her legs handled at the best of time and with scabby legs going to be trick just wondered if there were any ticks to remove mud as I'm typing this resale am asking the impossible or we would all be doing it already

You need to wash the legs and use something like descab to soften the scabs and then take them off, there are many products out there for mud fever put this on once the ;leg is dry, I then wrap the leg in cling film over night which helps to soften the scabs which are left. Be very carefull when you dry the legs only use the towel once and try and contain the scabs so they do not get a cross infection. You can then apply either something like muddy marvile or Vasiline to act as a barrier against the mud. Its not a quick fix and you will have to go through the same thing each evening, but you should get on top of it. Re the cling film I assume your horse is in a night if not then do not apply. This is just what I do and have found that it works.

If she is really a problem, get some sedaline from the vets that way you can knock her out and give her a good clear up and keep her stress free while you do it. There are no corner cutting methods with MF if you want to get it cleared up, if you don't it could get far worse. Tube of sedalin and scrub scrub scrub. As a side note, I am sure that by the time you have it under control she will be much better with her legs from the regular handling.

Mine are turned out in a bog and come in knee deep every night. I find leaving them in a very deep bed of straw overnight will knock most of the mud off leaving just a little to be brushed away. Might be worth a try if yours isn't keen on having legs touched.

One came in lame a few weeks ago and I hosed the wet mud off to have a look at her leg, that also cleaned it up a treat.

I don't have any experience with mud fever though sorry so I'm not sure which would be the right course of action in that situation.
