I've posted a few pics of Badger asking about doing working hunters and everyone says he doesn't look well muscled enough and too fat bellied!

Well not much has changed!

He's ridden about 5 times a week with a mixture of road/hill/fast/school work. On limited grazing in the day, add lip hayledge and I scoop low cal mix + carrots once a day. He's full of energy. Also cribs a lot.

Any ideas? I love him but want everyone else to love him too!! People before said hill work, I think he is musically though?

i dont think he needs weight off at all. Remember working hunter is still a show class so he shouldn't be running as light as say a show jumper. I think what doesn't help his cause is that it looks like he doesn't naturally have a great deal of 2nd thigh so it looks like his back end just drops off from the top of his tail instead of being rounded.

I presume that he is plaited for the working hunter class? I couldn't quite see, but his tail could probably do with pulling too. And his tail looks a little yellow and would look much nicer if it was white. Only little things, but it all helps with the overall look. He is lovely :-)

What a gorgeous boy :) I think the photograph itself is doing him a disservice though, a grey horse in direct sunlight blanks out all of his lovely contours and muscling! Try taking a picture of him on a cloudy day, on the flat, because judging from the horizon line that picture was taken at a bit of an angle which will alter how he tooks too :)

He does look smaller behind, would say that you need to be tough and work hard in the school and on the hills if you want him to be bigger.
Also the low calorie feed wouldn't be helping him muscle up- but understand that you don't want him fat!

Pessoa work helped mine a lot in the early stages, he was a complete giraffe when I first got him, had an upside down neck and really hollow quarters, the cantering pic in my sig is after two months of lots of pessoa (or rather, the cheap alternative) work.

You need to work him as if you were getting him fit for hunting.

Drop the carrots, and think about changing his feed from a mix to a cube based one with not too much starch.

He's such a superstar!

He's got a nice front end but his back end doesn't match to me and needs further muscling, I would do hill work and also really get him working from behind when schooling and hacking to build his back end up. He's lovely though, I love a nice grey.

I agree. I had a quick play with the photo to try and bring out a bit more detail (and alter the crop and vignetting a bit!) He's lovely. :)

I think he's a sweetie and I've seen your piccies when he's plaited and tarted up, and he does look v smart. I'm not a show person but someone on my yard does show. I agree with the others, good front end but topline and hind doesn't quite match and mane and tail could be sparkly white. For topline, as well as hill work and proper schooling, I'd second the pessoa or equiami, and pole work for a gymnastic work out. He needs enough food to gain muscle so maybe adding some protein along with a good amount of work, should mean he builds muscle but not fat - have you spoken to any feed companies to see if they do a non fattening muscle builder?

Some of it might just be his conformation and physiology (?) though, so it may be an uphill struggle (pardon the pun) and you can be pleased as punch that you have such a lovely boy even if he's not going to be a top top show ponio :-) I think showing is a v odd thing though - you might as well just bring a judge to your field and say "do you like my horse" !
