How can I improve his recall?

Barneys done very well learning to come back when we call and we haven't had a problem in over 6 months and he's had regular reminders of it. But today as my neighbour came across the field (has looked after barn a few times) he shot off after him and out of the field ignoring us as we called him and we ended up finally catching him just outside the gate. He had run over some smashed glass but seemed okay but as my mum grabbed his collar she caught his ear (accidently) and he yelped so someone thought it would be a good idea to come over and have a go at us for punishing him .. We would never hit him even though he was naughty so how can I improve his recall to make it 100 % in all situations? Ta in advance

I never leave the house, even to our own field, without food or a ball or a toy in my pocket.
Also make sure the dog is hungry when you take him out so that every time he pops back to you, he gets some of his daily allowance of food from your pocket.
You might also try a whistle to get his attention. Recall him before his interest switches elsewhere as once he is off and running it is often too late.
