I have a welsh a mare who had laminitis last year and at least once before I got her so am starting to wonder what I am going to do when the spring grass hits. Shes currently in the field with my other mare and my friends mare both of them need grass and mysti (welsh a) Wont stay in another field alone :/ in our top field she has a pen but it's only electric tape and people do forget to turn it back on once they've bought their horses out and she loves to run around so I don't want to use it unless I have to. I bought her a muzzle a few years ago like this http://www.millbryhill.co.uk/equest...rse-care-805/comfort-grazing-muzzle-32447.htm
But she managed to get it off so i gave up. What can do to make sure it stays on? I tried tying it into her mane but she just ripped her mane out with it ..

My fly rug has a headcollar loop built in so you could pop one on her and attach it to that? Otherwise no ideas sorry, I'm forever finding fly masks etc strewn across the field.

try one of the cheep plastic muzzles with a piece of string as a throat lash. Remember when the head is down, what looks tight at normal head carriage becomes very loose

Oops!
The trouble is, you dont want her to get the muzzle off, but in an emergency (if she got caught up) you dont want it to hurt her, so while having a headcollar on over the top will probably work.......how safe is it??
could you maybe, just have her out for a set time, and have her in the rest of the time!!
Or a hood over the top, not one with just eye holes, but with a more open face?

I'd say having a headcollar on is safer than plaiting it into a mane. Lots of people leave headcollars on there horses if they are difficult to catch. If the muzzle gets stuck or tangled n it's plaited into there manes it's going to cause alot of pain to them

I could put a field safe headcollar over the top I've got one somewhere .. I can't see it being any worse than the actual muzzle as that's built in the same way :) plus it will only be for a couple of hours a day for the other 2 to get some grass .. Will give it a go!
