I realised today why I VERY rarely use a noseband on H, decided to put one, just a plain cavesson , on today as he has been opening his mouth a lot lately, to give me a ickle more control and I was not feeling very confident, coming down with man flu I think !!

I am usually of the opinion that there must be a reason for him opening his mouth and I dont like to clamp it shut. Also, nosebands make his bridles that little titghter behind the ears and he thinks a bridle is going to attack him at the best of times !!

Tacked him up and put his headcollar on whilst I had a quick faff, lock up yard etc before going, normally he will stand there perfectly, but today came back from bog to find him trying to scratch it off on the stable door and his leg !!!

Does anyone else's horse do this ? do I assume he does not like it ? It was in the right position, not too tight but not baggy loose. Def not bit etc, as does not do it with no noseband.

He rode lovely, had lovely contact and attention from him. Would like to better the situation so I could use one every so often. But dont want him to be uncomfortable either !

If he doesn't normally wear one he was probably wondering what it was and if he could get it off. As he was fine riding in it I wouldn't worry he will get used to it.

I would assume he just doesn't like it tbh especially as you say it makes the bridle slighly tighter. Maybe try a larger bridle? TBH though a cavesson won't make alot of difference as its really just cosmetic. I don't use nosebands on the whole either especially ones that clamp the mouth shut..

My share horse has a grackle and he hates it, I reckon it tickles his nose! Owner does it up very loose but I do it a bit tighter and he doesn't scratch as much. Your horse probably just isn't used to it!

Check his 'beard' isn't caught up in the buckle etc !

I have to keep my mares trimmed short or she refuses to let me do the buckle up

Do you have a comfort bridle? he might not like the extra pressure on his poll? if not what about trying out that idea by attaching a noseband over the top of the headpiece just to see if it makes any difference?

I might invest in a poll pad, was thinking about it the other day, I can't afford the makes of comfort that would fit him, so need to adapt what he has already !!!
