Quite easily...apparently!
I arrived at the yard this morning and went to say hello to all the horses as usual. I noticed that Blackie (a very old, chunky cob type) was looking rather lively, so I went over to watch. As I got closer I realised it wasn't Blackie...it was NED! He had jumped over a rather large XC fence, ditch and gate (in one go!) to get in there. He looked concerned, as did Blackie's field mate, Sandy. They were snorting and neighing to each other. I put Ned back in his field, but he wouldn't stop neighing to Sandy.
Blackie was nowhere to be seen, I told YO and she came dashing over. Blackie is her mothers horse and her pride and joy! YO checked the bushes around the field, we were scared he may have had a heart attack and died...nope! (thank goodness). We checked all the fences, which were still standing, so we were dubious that he would have got out that way, but we sent YO's OH to look around the farm anyway.
I left YO and a few others to it and started to get on with the jobs.
Other people started to arrive and since YO is in charge of the lessons, we had to get going, but YO's OH was still looking, along with a couple of others.
I went one way with a small group and YO went the other across the farm with her lead rein ride to look for him.
We met up with YO and the first thing she said was "He was in the bl***y hedge!!!"
Somehow, this large, elderly horse had got into a ditch and jammed himself in a thick hedge!!! The cat has trouble getting in and out of that hedge to hunt, so how this massive beast got himself in there I'll never know!! He must have been standing very still, I walked up and down that hedge and didn't see or hear him!
No harm was done and when I left the yard, he was happily back in his field
Biggest panic we've all had in a long time!!
