how can you tell if people enquiring about loan horse are genuine?!?

Hello,

I posted a few weeks ago about a horse belonging to a friend of my mum's - he's 14 and just never really done anything other than sit in a field, but needs rehoming quite urgently due to health/family problems etc. she's had him since he was born so is veyr attached, and obviously wants to give him a good home! He's not worth v much, having done so little, so she's advertising him as LWVTB.

She's found someone who advertised on Project-horses.com for tkaing on diffiuclt horses, reschooling and then selling (but basically saying she'll take as long as they need to find them forever homes etc etc). She seems to think this is a good idea for the pony - but you hear of so many people doing that sort of thing and then disappearing - how cna you tell if she's genuine?

The girl has offered for my mum's friend to go to see her yard, but i know that some oif the scammers do that too! I thought of references, but then they can be faked....

Bottom line--- you cant!! Go with gut instinct, go see yard, speak to people on yard, not just woman..... sounds an expensive way to sell said pony IMO, as your mums friend will have to pay this person livery etc up until pony is sold, which could be anything from a few weeks to a year!!
 
May be genuine, but I would be very wary with this scenario.
You need to find out if she just takes a percentage of the horses selling price, or whether she charges livery whilst horse is there for schooling and also a percentage of the selling price etc. The latter could be very costly and maybe even no return if horse takes a long while to sell.

Yeh - no i think this girl takes them as a project (i.e. you 'gift' the horse to her) and then sells them on - she does claim to take as long as they need to make sure they're rehomed somewhere that will keep them forever, but it's a bit weird. Apparently she sounds veyr nice though.

he is rideable, but only really for hacking (totally unschooled) unless someone wants to school him, which is of course possible at 14 but not ideal. he's being kept on his own so is also a bit difficult to hack on his own if you see another horse as it winds him up, unsurprisingly!
 
Personally i would not do this i think she would be better off finding a person to loan him with view to buy than by the sounds of it a dealer type person. As for references ask for one from a vet and farrier they use and check out yard also speak to people in local task shops as well to see what they say about person.

I know someone who loaned a pony out went to yard to look at it they said private yard etc and they let them have pony turns out this wasnt there yard the real owners were on holiday so someone out on a scam who stole the pony.
 
Abigail - yeh that's what i'm worried about, i'd heard stories like that too - so sad!!

trouble is she's had him advertised for a while with hardly any interest. i'd take him myself to do the same as that girl if necessary but we have no more space unfortunately.

Binky - He's 14.1 Welsh cob x (quite cobby i think, i've never met him) and lives out. She is elderly and i think he's pretty quiet to hack, though he 'bucks and twists' if you try and take him away from another horse when hacking (I think this is jsut becuase he's on his own poor little mite). He's a bit cheeky apparently and will test people out (homebred), and needs 'fiorm handling' (read: occasionally lifts a hoof at people or nibbles) but is basically nice. do you know anyone who mgiht want him??
 
And no matter what the lady says, you can never ensure that a horse is rehomed somewhere that will keep them forever - circumstances change. Plus once sold, the new owner can do whatever they like, as in any private sale.
 
Ah bugger sounded lovely till the buck and twist part lol. What would he be like if he was kept with others? Or kept on own and didnt meet any other horses?

I've been looking for a while now for something quiet for an owner/friend of ours, to plod round her estate on/ride round in the field. Not hard work, only a very quiet hack once or twice a week and occassionally have her mum sit on it for a walk round too. She's looking for a sane uncomplicated little cobby really, ideally was looking for an older one looking to semi retire and live out.

Nooo! Sorry but I wouldn't go anywhere near an ad like that. As soon as you 'gift' the horse you have lost all control and she could sell them on the next day and make a quick £1000 in her pocket. Yes she may be genuine but there are so many dodgy people out there.

I just loaned out a hack only, he's a bit younger but has his issues. I advertised him and was completely honest and still had quite a few enquiries. I put in specific requirements about how he was to be kept, distance from me etc.

There are lots of people who want LWVTB's. I weeded out anyone who didn't sound right and found a lovely retired guy who is quite experienced but only wants to hack. He came to ride my gelding twice, spent ages brushing and talking to him and I visited the yard he is going to and chatted with the yard owner. Genuine people will think nothing of visiting 2 or 3 times to make sure the horse is right for them.

Where has this horse been advertised? I tried locally but ended up with an ad on the internet just cos it reaches more people.
 
Sounds like a little poppet who's loneliness would account for him misbehaving when he finally see's someone from his own species! Warning: people are always nice when they are about to make a buck or two!! I wouldn't touch those types of adverts with a barge-pole. Let's hope someone on here (with some experience behind them) can help as it sounds like a major re-socialising problem that, once solved, will leave a lovely little hack. Good luck and carry out as many checks as possible. PS Have a look on missinghorsesonloan website to be aware of what can happen with those types of adverts.
