Having read a few posts about horses weight limits etc I just wondered what would be the kind of signs you would see if you were to heavy for your horse?? Im concerned that i am prehaps to heavy for my boy at moment ( havent been riding much and put on a bit , on diet now though and slowly pounds are dropping mind you im starving as i write this!!! ) And just wondered what to look out for, he seems happy enough, working well happy to be tacked up and mounted, no signs of soreness in back no loss of muscle bit lazy but thats his nature any way. What else would tell me he was struggling?? thanks !

he sounds fine, unless your weight effects his way of going he is managing.

if your thinking your a little on heavy side ensure you sit correctly which will help, as a badly balanced lighter rider would hinder him more thn a little more weight sat correctly and evenly in the saddle. dont worry im sure your fine, iv a girl at the yard tht worries like you and she is no where near too heavy for her lad, just paranoid

Thnks, i have been told i ride lighter than most , so hopefully ok for now, going start my running plan next week so should shed it bit quicker, got nasty virus at moment which doesnt help! I know my weights not ideal at the moment just glad he is a big boy who is really filling out now ( his 7 next thursday! ) his just over 17hh kwpn with good solid bone although not that wide in the body but well muscled, im 15st 10 at the mo which is heaviest i have ever been. he has wow saddle which i think possibly helps, i do apologies to him ever time i get on. Fingers crossed diet goes well for his sake ( partner just brought chocs in and i resisted! )

he is a big lad and if you are well balanced and he has no medical issues then he will be fine. Even my WC xTB 16.1 with EPSM can carry my sister in walk and she is a bit unbalanced and weighs 16st

You are too heavy for your horse if;
1. You have to dig him out of the school after a brief halt transition.
2. You are continually having to treat his belly for scrape wounds.
3. You can put your feet down if he goes too fast.
4. You don't have to cut your toe-nails very often.
5. He demonstrates free-style dressage movements like the splits.
6. He used to be a Shire, but is now mistaken for a Shetland.
Hope this helps

I think that you know yourself if you are too heavy. It doesn't matter what other people say to you either way, deep down if you have doubts, listen to them but get real and don't blow them all out of proportion. xx

a few years ago i saw a teenage girl get on a pony that was about 14hhs.
he buckled he ended up belly on the floor, if i had'nt seen it for myself i would'nt have belived it!

thats to heavy!!!
