Old lady is now unshod but I was wondering if people take things slower with their horses when the transition starts? Obviously farrier said don't walk on too much stone til she gets her hoof boots but she's sound on concrete, sand and bed. Prettyfooty on stones but she had been shod for 20 years and just come out of heartbars. She's a lammy pony too.
Diet is 5 hour soaked hay(getting there!!) and 1/2 a cup of fast fibre in dinner and breakfast with danillon and Prascend. Going to order some Pro- hoof when I can afford it! Currently on no grass but hopefully can go out on starvation paddock soon.
So how do I work this? Just wanted advice etc. she's also retired so work load isn't anything to worry about

Thanks :))

This is when you start to get to know your pony even better than you do!
Start to take her for walks, you will see what surfaces she is happy on, this will start the process of getting her feet used to the expansion and contraction differences due to being unshod.
I always recommend all my clients who go barefoot to get their horses moving freely on their chosen surface that way you avoid any discomfort.
TAKE YOUR TIME, there is no hurry and it will all be worth it in the end, also if you do manage to get the feet to customise themselves slowly, then other surfaces can be brought into play for short periods without causing any discomfort.

Ahh :) I see! Thank you!
I'm trying to avoid stones now, we luckily have a lot of concrete for her to walk on. Shoes only taken off yesterday and she looks happy. Farrier is happy that she's landing on her heel/frog more and her frogs are developed enough for no shoes now. Heels are quite contracted though
