How clean is your yard?

As a livery an unkept yard would put me right off. If the YO won't bother about basic tidiness etc, then I would worry about how they manage things that really matter! Ours does look lived in but YO and staff keep it tidy and everything gets put away - yard gets painted once a year etc.

the yard i used to keep my horse at is sooo messy. the kids leave their toys lying around EVERYWHERE, the yard is never swept, they have one working wheelbarrow, 1 fork/shovel/broom, no feed room, the tack room has a rats nest in it, and i could go on for ever. it was horrible i used to just go round cleaning up after everyone, it was quite a shock going from that yard to duchy college which completely spotless even the muck heap has to be square and straight.

LOL, you sound charming, bet your yard has a lovely easy-going atmosphere. I didn't just make it up out of thin air, "IME", I never said I'd been on your particular yard, although come to think of it, the attitude sounds familiar. :p

it does thanks, everyone knows exactly where we stand with each other, we all have set jobs allocated so if something isn't done only the person that hasn't done it gets in trouble, everyone gets on well and we are very proud of how popular and sucsessful our yard is, none of us take kindly to assumptions being made of the way we do things especially from people that have never set foot on the yard.

Well, mine's been at a BHS training yard for the last two years so everything's been spotless/immaculate, as you would expect.

Now Himself has come back to the organised chaos of my place, tho' the things I'm particular about are e.g. drinking water (always fresh); stable skipped out if he's poo'd; rugs/saddlecloths kept fresh, etc. However the things we're a bit sloppy on are maybe tack cleaning (keep meaning to get around to it); muck heap needs sorting; chicken all over the blimmin place; dogs leave their toys around, etc etc.

Maybe some of you ultra-tidy types would fancy a few days in wildest Devon to come and stay and sort out our untidyness? I've an OCD tidy friend who keeps threatening to come and sort out the house ........

Sounds fabulous :p , but with a YO who can't tell the difference between a general comment based on one's own experiences and a personal attack on the way their yard does things, I'll still pass thanks. :D

Mine is messy but in a good way...if that makes sense! We don't have concrete on the yard, we just have dirt so we don't need to sweep! Horses are kept out 24/7 in summer so no straw or muck anywhere!

Utter shambles, frankly. We do repairs ourselves, there's hay and straw everywhere and the girl who has come back recently has taken to tipping her water out in the outdoor school-her horse dips his hay so I cleared loads out today and dumped it along with remnants of a haynet that was given on the yard near her box as a reminder!

My area is very clean but some people soak hay anywhere they fancy and tip the water out wherever-makes for interesting puddles in this heat.

Where in any of my posts does it say i own it?? please point it out to me  because i have never said i do, run it yes own it no

i have a livery yard, and yes it is very tidy, everything has a place and is put away. commercial yards have to have order and tidiness about them otherwise it becomes a health and safety issue! Also remember if there is ever an emergency you know exactly where things are and are able to act immediately, esp if tools etc are required. However i am ocd about my tack room! but again so easy to find things and always looks good. And if everything is kept clean and tidy and put away properly it is a very quick process!

Pretty much spotless. All tools are kept in the tool shed, wheelbarrows lined up and forks / brushes hung up. Toolshed is reguarly swept. Yard is swept fully twice a day. All beds done twice a day and barrows must be covered from stable to muck heap. Muck heap must be levelled and squared off after each barrow has been added. All horses feet are to be picked out before leaving the stable, rugs folded and on racks. All rugs washed regularly along with girths etc. Ermmmm I could go on for hours...

If the yard is done to a high standard every day then there is never 'alot' to do, I would be put off by a messy yard as a livery and I would be ashamed to work on one!

methinks this is yet another tongue-in-cheek thread not fully understood :D

I didn't intend it to be such.

I have never worked or liveried on a yard, so other than the riding school I learned to ride at, which was always neat, tidy and clean (but with very little concrete), I have no experience of yards, good, bad or otherwise.

The yard we visited yesterday was immaculate and by the looks of the postings here, that is the way many (if not most) yards are. For my part, I found it a somewhat sterile and a little intimidating, BUT I keep my workshop immaculate, with all the tools clean and in their place and the lathe and drill press cleaned after every job, so I do understand the mentality and the sense behind it.

I'm a little saddened that people have used my thread to have a 'pop', that was certainly not my intention in starting it, I was / am genuinely interested in finding out what the average yard is like, immaculate by the sounds of it.

Ours is safe but messy - often bits of hay and bedding wafting over the concrete, we rarely sweep the barn but at least we don't have to worry about levelling the manege because we haven't got one!

But, hey, we keep the horses at home, so don't have to worry about offending other liveries with OCD tendencies, and the horses are happy, healthy and contented!

oh thank god, i was reading all the 'immaculate' replies and starting to get a complex!!

I am generally fairly clean by nature, don't spill bedding or hay etc, so the very small yard area normally only gets swept up once a week.
some days things like headcollars get left on the yard, some days there all hung up neatly. im at home alone so i can be as messy or as OCD tidy as i like. suits me.
some days i have lazy days and will leave a full skip bucket on the yard, other days i will brush and clean everything within an inch of its life, the ponies prefer the former as usually they get blitzed too.

I'd hate to be on a yard like this as I would spend all my time worrying about making a mess instead of being able to relax and enjoy time with my horse. Give me a nice relaxed yard any day where the YO knows that the odd bit of straw blowing about isn't going to do anyone any harm.

Is tidyish. We clean up after ourselves but our bits and pieces such as rugs, sprays, grooming kits, etc are outside our stables.

I love it. There are no rules as such, we just all appreciate what we have and respect each other. Very rare a stable every becomes available, several of the girls at the yard just keep adding to their numbers. Idyllic yard, idyllic out riding. Lovely working farmers who let us come and go as we please and get on with things.
