How cold does it have to be for you to put your TB in a heavy weight turnout??

Don't think mine will go in a HW at all this winter, turned away TB unclipped.
She is in a MW with neck at the mo, but i'm lucky she is a fat good doer that runs hot.

Mines unclipped and has a far better coat on him this year than last. He's out in a M/W rug and perfectly warm, in fact when the wind drops and the sun comes out (as it has today) I'll have to check he doesn't get too hot! Keep checking your horse and the weather forecast to make a judgment, but over rugging is just as bad as she'll molt her coat!

Mine is clipped and in hers already - but I was told by her previous owner she's a very poor doer and does get cold - she was dropping off and tucked up in her middle weight - wimp that she is...

Depends entirely on the horse. I have the coldest TB in the world, he is in atm because of an infection in his hock and despite 3 rugs at night (1 under rug with hood, 1 plain blanket -not wool and 1 HW stable rug with hood) he was still looking cold! I gave in last night and put a wool rug on as well and finally this morning he looked happy and hadn't destroyed his bed! Other horse (although not TB) is in just an under rug with no hood and HW stable rug with hood which is only up at night and he is as warm as toast.

as others have said, it really depends on the horse. I have just clipped my warmblood and he is still toasty in his lightweight full neck stable and medium/lite turnout!

I have some lovely medium weights/heavys to put on him but he is just too warm :D

Both my full TB and 3/4 TB are out today with fleeces under no fill rainsheets ( no necks) and are both perfectly warm, although neither are clipped and the full TB looks more like a yak than a horse she has that much coat this year! The way we're going i cant see them having heavyweights on at all as they're stabled at night. The 3/4 TB wintered out last year in a 180g combo T/O rug (with a LW no neck stable rug underneath if it was really cold) and was fine all winter :) If i manage to get onto grass livery before the worst of winter i may use my heavyweights but otherwise probably not.

mine is a connie x tb and seems to keep warm fairly well on her own. She is out 24/7 with a blanket clip. Last night she was in H/W with neck as it was cold (2 degrees) windy and wet. Today she is a snuggy turnout hood as I washed her neck and mane as doing dressage tomorrow and a no neck M/W but tonight the h/w with neck will go back on as it will be minus degrees tonight. She would however be too hot in the H/W during the day. I try and keep the heavy off until temps are constantly less than 2 0r 3 degrees.

But its really down to the individual horse.....

About 10 degrees. Horse fears the clippers, so clipping often is not an option! Therefore the best option is to prevent his coat from growing too quick (cue HW rug).

Mine's been in his HW Rambo for weeks. When it gets colder, I'll pop an under rug underneath, and then a duvet!

By keeping him really toasty I keep him content and settled in the field. I know when he's cold as he'll hooley around the field like a loon, trying to keep himself warm. He's recently been retired due to unsoundness so I want to keep him as warm and lazy feeling as possible!!

He's not clipped, but he is not over rugged, as there are no signs of him breaking out in sweat at all.

My TBX 's are out in M/W's without necks, as is the cob (he's freshly clipped, the others aren't.)
Watching the weather as they are out on grass livery and if the temp is below freezing at night may bung on a M/W combi or a H/W combi if its wet, windy and freezing. They have very good shelter, and ad lib hay, but watch each one for signs of being cold/dropping weight.

When he is clipped and it's snowing.

He currently has quite a high chaser clip and has a MW with a neck, if he hadn't ripped his MW without a neck he was only have the neck on wet days.
He is a very hot horse and is only out during the day but it does get windy and there's no field shelter.

My TBxID is out in his HW winter turnout and wool day rug underneath, in at night with MW stable rug and wool rug underneath. He will go into his HW stable rug high neck and MW once it is constantly in the minus' at night. And he will keep the MW stable rug on when out in day instead of wool rug. So prob not long left, He has got a bib clip and legs off due to skin problems but he is a wuss.

My irish mare is in a HWT turn out with full neck at the moment, and has a 220g high neck stable rug with a 250g stable rug under that at night. When it's really chilly in the day, she has had a 100g stable rug under her TO rug too. She has been clipped 3 times already this year, is not great to clip and isn't a particularly warm horse, so her and me are happy!

My TB has a blanket clip (nearly grown out now though) and currently has a 150g Amigo on at night, with or without a full neck fleece underneath depending on how chilly it feels- and if he's a bit sweaty I prefer to put the fleece on so he cools down more slowly.
In the day he has either LW TO with neck, or MW without neck- or with neck if really cold/wet/windy. :)

Looking at this thread with interest, as C is perfect temp ATM with current rugs but don't want to risk him dropping off too much if I don't put a HW on early enough!

my normal TB (if you can ever call a tb normal) is fully clipped and is in a 320g at night no neck and 220g with neck in the day. I only use neck covers as a means to keep clean so thats the only reason he's in that. During the next cold snap he will go in a 300g part neck turn out (thats all ive got atm but shopping for a new one on pay day) and a 420g stable, I dont aim to put much else on him, so hoping that will be enough when we get into the minus's

My boy will go in his HW tomorrow. He's been snug and toasty in his MW. Not much shelter in field and I've discovered it gets quite chilly. We're getting him a duvet tomorrow, and he has his HW stable. Currently he's in 2 fleeces and a 200grm quilt. He's got a high trace clip.

As alot of people here say it depends on the horse but my bad chilly doer of a wimpy TB is currently in his MW full neck and will probably be in his "lighter" heavyweight by the end of the week. He is unclipped. IF it gets really cold he has a 480gm heavy heavy in silver. Looks like a spacehorse.. :) or full battle armour, take your pick.

Mine are out 24/7 unclipped, unrugged and still just on grass and they are little porkers!!:D They have light weight rain sheets if it gets really wet, windy and around freezing, they'll also get add-lib haylage once the grass has totally gone, but they need to loose some flab before that happens!!:D

I think it all depends on the horse, I caved in and put a heavy weight on my TB Sunday (he has a full clip), but another TB at the yard (unclipped) has only just gone into a standard medium weight

I feel silly because I have always been one who prefers to rug on the light side but have my unclipped ISH in a 220g with neck already (she is out 24/7 but with access to shelter). She wore 220g with neck all through last winter but came out of it looking a bit lean and rather hairy. I did sometimes put a fleece underneath but for this year have ordered a 340g with neck. It sounds ridiculous putting that on an unclipped horse (to me at least), and obviously I won't keep her in it if there are any signs of her sweating up or being hot, but so far she has kept a minimal coat and I want it to stay this way as I think she'd go insane if we tried to clip her.

Mum's new appy with a trace clip (which is growing out) is in 220g with no neck and hopefully has a 300g with neck coming this week. He doesn't have much of a coat at all but seems warm enough.

Mine is in a HW and a LW by night and a MW underrug and a MW turnout by day. It's -4 after sunset (plus windchill on top of this) where he is at livery and he is clipped. At our old yard, he would probably only have needed a MW but then it wasn't so cold and windy there. Surely the number of rugs used is going to depend on the weather and temperature where you keep your horse, his/her general tolerance of cold and clip... ;)

My tb is unclipped and unrugged atm :) She didn't wear a HW at all last year, atm she has a lw on if it's very wet only :) My hunter is fully clipped and currently out in a mw but think will be in a hw by the end of the week!

My Anglo Arab & TB never have heavy rugs on, ever. They're both unclipped and only ever have mediums with hoods, if its really cold & wet. They've only had 'no fill' rainsheets on so far & my TB has a medium on tonight as its colder than usual.
