Something I have always wondered is how come you get 4 faults in BSJA for both refusals, run out and knock downs? Surely refusals/run outs is more of a disobedience and so should carry a higher penalty (aside from 2 and out) or knock downs a lower? I think it is unfair for a horse to roll a pole and end on 4, equal finish with a horse who refuses?

Doesn't really matter in the scheme of things- if you have a pole down you are unlikely to be placed. If in a jumpoff there is the unlikely situation that the four faulters are placed, there is a high chance you'd have the faster time because obviously having a stop they have to come round again wheras a pole down you keep going and achieve the faster time.

because time limits 'should' be designed so that a horse with a stop gets time faults a horse that is clear doesn't but that doesn't always work obviously.

Just remember it wasn't that long ago when first stop was 3 faults second 6 and a 3rd was elimination!!!

I think historically that for a horse to refuse when it is very wrong and to prevent a fall (remember than equestrian sports have military origins) is deemed better judgement than hitting a pole (which if it was a solid object could cause a fall).

However I stand to be corrected on this one!
